An odd thing

So we all know that our tastes sometimes change after surgery and that some of us don't like sweets so much or have some intolerances that we didn't have before. But how about suddenly liking something that was a lifelong hated food!?!  All my life I have pretty much eaten anything and everything. I was the one kid that liked brussel sprouts and smoked oysters. But the one thing I always hated from the beginning of time was oatmeal and any hot cereal. HATED IT ALL. Even with butter and brown sugar. Now oatmeal cookies are were an entirely different matter as there is nothing finer than oatmeal cookie dough. But cooked oatmeal- well just forget it. Until now. While caring for my brother after his surgery I would make him oatmeal and suddenly I had this desire to eat some, with blueberries of course. I thought i would probably take one bite and throw it out but I didn't. Now I really like the stuff. Cannot figure this out. So odd. Could it be that the sleeve not only removes the ghrelin but actually implants some sort of magic device that causes desire for healthy food? Of course, I always liked healthy food and pretty much all food but oatmeal is a total new thing. Had some this morning with the requisite blueberries. Anybody else suddenly like something they always hated?   diane

well, I haven't eaten anything I always hated....but....I could have sworn on a stack of bibles that I would never hate my protein shake - GNC banana cream powder.....I don't really hate it, but have to hold my nose when I drink it. I can't stand sweet liquids anymore.

Sweet beverages were the bane of my existence once upon a time and I'm talking about non-sugar sweetened stuff. So taste definitely changes and to hear it with you at this stage, well maybe, just maybe one day I'll be eating liver & onions - but I don't count on it!

yeah, know the feeling. find a shake you like and then one day you can't stand it one more second. As for the too sweet stuff, mix a blob of greek yogurt into anything too sweet. helps a lot. ditto coco powder. and hey, i like liver and onions !   made pate for xmas. D

yes i can relate before surgery i would never have eaten chilli yet after surgery here was me craving something i had never eaten before... then i had this urge to have coffee i have not been able to touch coffee since my first pregnancy over 27 yrs ago ... i really liked it but it gave me heart burn maybe thats a good thing or i might have got addicted to it haha..
and then there is peanut butter, prior to surgery i might have it on toast 2-5 times a year at most..
after surgery i started craving it  and was eating it by the spoon full... even now in maintenence i can go weeks without it then all of a sudden for some odd reason i start craving it again and i have no idea why..

Hummm, glad i am not the only one with strange new eating desires. Peanut butter or almond butter on this low carb flat bread is my lunch many a day. I roll them up and they look like fat cigars. Made chilli the other day for the first time in over a year. It was great! Added the secret spices of cinnamon, allspice, thyme, coco powder and a dash of balsalmic vinegar. It was really a treat.

Got a bunch of that PB2 peanut powder thinking i would make my own protein bars but no action so far. Could be yet another way to use the new found  oatmeal?

And yeah i sure am addicted to coffee. Thats one thing that didn't change. Could hardly wait to get back on the stuff after surgery. But if i get a little heart burn from it i chew a tums and keep swilling.

This surgery sure messes with your mind but so far its in good ways. I keep thinking i will eat refried beans as many do and keep buying cans of the ff stuff but somehow never get it eaten. Funny that somedays we just forget about food. D

Ha!!  I took this picture for the low carb board - of Mexican mash and MY peanutbutter cigar!!

Naturally More, mixed with hershey dark special unsweetened cocoa, rolled up in a slice of havarti!  yUmz!  The naturally more peanut butter has wheatgerm and flax seeds in it, so it has a texture that is delightful on my tongue!

*chuckle*  I never forget about food!  food food food!

But now, some is enough!  And I am thankful for sure

hey these look good - much better than my cigars which are quite brown. what an exotic and interesting food combination. We may not be able to eat much but that doesn't mean what we do eat shouldn't be anything short of exquisite. Getting pickier (and possibly wiser) in my old age.

So what exactly is in the Mexican mash?  diane

Honestly, I wouldnt have thought to wrap it in havarti, except a neighbor introduced me to havarti and those really thin Anna's gingersnap cookies. (darn her to heck)   Havarti REALLLY works so nicely with a sweet thing, it brings out the creamy and sweet in the cheese (pairing it with a sweeet thing).  It tastes like a reeces cup. But yea, I might not eat so much at a time, but I like it to be delightful!

Mash is just a meat, salsa (usually green) and a cheese slice.  I usually have 2 ounces of meat, but cut it back to 1.5 when I am *also* having the PNB thing.

I also tend to smother it in Worchestershire pepper!  yum!!  It tastes kinda like an enchalada verdes, minus the corn tortilla part!  I use whatever kind of meat the budget is allowing (the budget being both money and caloric :} )

I will also just do the meat and cheese and instead of salsa will add hot lime pickle, or a curry, or tandoori spice, or morroccan spices, or greek and maybe use feta and black olives with some artichoke hearts or artichoke tampanade in there.  The meat/spice/cheese thing is just the skeleton, and you can make it as different as you please with just the cheese or the spices alone!

Probably because we have restricted vegetables in our weight loss period........

And we eat very little food now... compared to pre-op....

I really love certain vegetables now!

I always generally liked veggies before......

But now..... I really have taken the time to really "taste" things instead of wolfing down food.

Dang..... I love the taste of broccoli !!!! Green beans are heavenly !!!! Spinach rules! Grilled Eggplant...Come on! Cabbage!!! Bokchoi !!!

yep, I've really gotten to love certain veggies and fruits too that i used to like fine but was too busy eating pasta and dessert. Now i look at my dinner and think " I know i am supposed to get in this three ounces of fish first but what i would really rather eat is this steamed cauliflower"  In the summer i have really gotten into roasted zuccinni with a sprinkling of parmessan cheese then broiled. Make it all the time and husband is so sick of it. And asparagus in season is divine. Really like variations on that fake fried rice recipe that has been posted using shredded cauliflower and other veggies and eggs. Can add almost anything too it and it works. And I make a mean sweet and sour red cabbage with apples and balslmic vineger and a dab of honey that my skinny brother loves. But hubby hates it and just can't eat the quantities resulting from even a half small head of cabbage. Fresh spinach sauteed in a little olive oil is so good. Another great spinach dish is just cooked chopped spinach with a few chopped onions, dash of lemon and a few blobs of fat free sour cream. Really delicious and not a calorie disaster.  And my sweet of choice is grapes and the currently available satsuma oranges. Wish i could get hubby to eat bok choy and such as I like all this stuff and get sick of the three vegetables he will eat which are snow peas, broccolli and cauliflower.

But it still doesn't explain the strange oatmeal fixation. One of these days I will probably wake up and hate it again.  D
