hmmm, maybe you can pretend you don't understand most of what she says and she will give up. Why do so many MILs think its their mission to tell their son's wives what to do all the time. Like you are a bloomin idiot. Oh well, Elina is right, take this as an opportunity to learn about eating triggers and then learn to address them. Don't let her spoil your holidays. gl  Diane

The language difference is really just incidental.  We would be having the same problems if we both spoke the same language.  I would probably be worse because at least now we can just pretend we are misunderstanding each other.

well then the only thing to do is escape as much as possible with errands, work, commitments of all sorts. sorry for such annoying cir****tances! i feel your pain! Or, why not start asking her to do chores like clean the kitchen, do the laundry, wash the car. maybe she will decide to leave early! D

I do not have any advice girlie, its hard when its family, especially when you have language issues and well.. especially when its family!

So.. here. This is the best I can do.  Maybe you can learn this song and hum it and giggle to yourself while you do not choke her to death, because we do not want you to go to jail!!

Ok, stepping in here with a different approach.  It was not my MIL but my SIL that drove me up the wall with her comments and cleaning what I had already cleaned.  I complainted to hubby that his sister was driving me insane.  His comment (he is so darn laid back and calm all the time makes me want to choke him), just let her do what she wants to do and ignore it.  When she realizes that it does not get to you, she will stop.  Easier said than don!.  So I tired it.  She wanted to clean the front door.  I get a glass of tea and watch her clean.  She wants to cook and 'scrub' my already clean kitchen, I get a glass of tea and watch TV or go outside and visit with hubby (note he is always outside when she is here) and let her have at it.  Once she saw that I did not care, she then wanted to be outside with her brother and get into his business.  Guess he knows her so well.  She does not seem to get on his nerves so it worked out quite well.  Now I have my house back when she visits and he gets to spend quality time with her.  This approach may work for you, you can only hope.   Good luck and drink lots of tea (unsweetened of course!).

Blessing to you....Dee

I have actually tried the ignore her approach...the problem is she thinks that gives her cart blanche to do anything. Last time, when I was ignoring the cleaning, comments, etc I came home and she had cleaned out my pantry and threw away the things that she thought I didn't need and was in the process of rearranging my kitchen.

Today, my friend, who speaks spanish, came over.  She (MIL) sat there in front of me and told her that i was so hard to be here because she tries to explain stuff to me and I just don't understand. She says she doesn't know me because we can never talk, so she doesn't know what kind of person I am.  My friend says 'maybe you should try to learn to speak english'  MIL says that its too hard and she doesn't have any need to speak english.  Seriously, who sits there and talks about you with your friend while you are sitting right there??

I have succeeded in not munching today.  The dog has gotten walked twice ;-)  I may have to give Frisco's retail therapy suggestion a shot.
