new take on the shrimp soup

we all like the costco shrimp wonton soup. tonight i wanted something along those lines but didn't want to drive 30 miles round trip to costco plus i hate all the packaging that comes on that product even though it is good. so i made my own shrimp soup with canned chicken broth, a bunch of frozen little shrimp, a can of fat free coconut milk and a can of diced tomatoes, plus some kefir lime leaves for flavoring. sort of a nice Thai taste though i didn't add any chili paste. a good thing on a cold rainy night. might be a substitute for the costco product if you can't get there. could leave out the coconut milk or tomatos if those are not handy. another good shrimp soup is to take a box of that roasted red pepper soup and heat it up and cook a bunch of the little salad shrimp in it, or chicken.. pretty good and easy.  D

Hey ya know, i found some shrimp boullion cubes in the cupboard that i forgot i had. Might make those into shrimp soup with the little salad shrimp and chicken broth. And I also have this package of stuff called bonita or something like that and it looks like shrimp shells and is supposed to be used to flavor soups. its in these sort of mesh bags that i think you throw in like a teabag or something. But the label and all instructions are in Chinese or Japanese so i don't know what it says. But it would be nice to make some varieties of the shrimp soup since what they sell around here as "shrimp meat" is inexpensive, low calorie and high protein. who needs the won ton on it anyway.
You keep at this Frisco and you are going to have to write a cookbook.  maybe we should all post our favorite sleever recipies and put them all together.  D

I think what you have are Bonito Flakes.....

Used in lots of Japanese dishes..... Used in sauces, broths as a spice. Common to see Bonito flakes used as a spice and garnish sprinkled on top of  a bowl of Udon Noodles (ahhhh...miss that!) or lightly topped on vegetables.

Hmm, you are right Frisco, thats what this stuff is. So I can actually eat these flakes? What exactly are they anyway? I thought maybe they were something that went into broth but got strained out sort of like bay leaves or lemon grass. Hope to try that soon. D
