Thyroid? Need help

I gained weight around my birthday which was the end of Oct. Then got into the Halloween candy. Then I started really doing the protein first and veggies if there is room, and haven't lost weight.

I am out of town now, visiting and Christmas shopping. I vowed I would not eat badly during this trip and gain anymore weight. I weighed myself this morning and I have gained a pound. It could be that it's not my scale, but good grief, I should be losing. I am staying on program.

Do I need to have my thyroid checked? My dad had low thyroid. And what do I ask for? I know  they have done a TSH or something like that, but is there something else  that goes into testing the thyroid besides that test?

My insurance company wanted to switch me from Protonix to Prilosec and I looked online and it said a side effect of Prilosc is weight gain! I called my dr. and said do what you have to do to get me back on
Protonix. Right now I am toughing it out with Tagamet until he can get me my Protonix. I am not going to take that Prilosc.

I am freaking out here. I am at 19 months post op and I read that there is a 10 lb gain after awhile, but does there have to be? I am going to get back to the gym routine which I am very good about, as soon as I get home from this long weekend. I now have Vitalady's strongest iron so I don't have to worry about eating red meat. i am going to do protein shakes next week. This is ridiculous! HELP!

as you say It might just be the scale, you might have lost weight but wiill not know until you return home and get on your regular scale. even between the doctors scale and our own can be a few lbs

Id not stress over it yet, cortisol loves it when we do that...keep to plan for now and when you get home then check your scale, remember it takes dropping 500 calories for a week before we see 1 lb drop of fat d, if your sodium is up you can retain water....

your not alone with still trying to get the weight off... ive dropped back down to 600-800 calories for this week to see if that helps.

The only thing with staying low carb is, every time we over do it on carbs we put back on water weight with the glycogen that our body grabs... I know for me it can take a couple of weeks to get it all off...

well, never hurts to get a thyroid test if you haven't had one in a while. as a child and young adult i took thyroid meds and then stopped and have tested normal ever since. go figure.

didn't know that prilosec causes weight gain! yikes! took it for years! but i would sure hold out for the protonix just cuz i think its the best ppi.  your body is probably just now reacting to the halloween candy and so forth. so you are right to back up and do a week of protein shakes and pretend like you are just a few weeks out from surgery. I think most of us, unless we are mega athletes, are going to have to do this once in a while as we all have bodies that just tend to want to gain. but you are right the scale is probably off and i bet sooon you will suddenly drop a few.

but you done good to come on this group and "freak out" which means you are addressing your concerns and getting support and thats the way to get to where you want to be.  Diane

Do you have any other symptoms of thyroid issues besides the weight gain?  Here's a list:

 • Fatigue and weakness
• Low basal temperature ( cold intolerance)
• Dry and coarse skin
• Hair loss
• Cold hands and feet
• Insomnia
• Constipation
• Depression
• Poor memory, forgetfulness, dementia
• Nervousness and tremors
• Immune system problems
• Heavy menstrual periods

If you have several of these you probably want to get tested.  It might also be that you are extremely insulin resistant.  Exercise and certain supplements can help with this.

I agree, go get your thyroid checked.
I used to beg for thyroid tests...and they are always normal.  I have been taking Prilosec for many years and would love to use it as an excuse for weight gain. I just did a quickie google search on weight gain and it said  "For people taking Prilosec, weight gain was reported as a rare side effect of the medication, occurring in less than 1 percent of people."
For me, my weight goes up when I choose to eat crap.  My exercise is next to nil and that doesn't help either.  Are you logging your food?  It's really important for me cuz I can't guesstimate very good.  Do you drink alcohol?  That is a big factor for weight gain and metabolism.  Processed foods also affect my weight gains.  Scales do not read the same......trust your own scale.
Relax my friend......eat healthy....move your body and stay in touch!  Love ya!

Do you know what test I ask for to have my thyroid tested? I want to make sure he does the correct one cause I  know somethings take more than one test or need to be taken when you haven't eaten, etc

don't freak out:  honestly, if you can still zip up your jeans things are not that bad.

I hope you can get the test if you need it but I think some relation is in order: Diane is right - stress hormones are bad bad bad for you.

big hugs, Sweetie!

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

My surgeon pulls a T3, T4, T4+, PTH, TSH, and thyroid suspension I have no idea what all of them are, but that's what my lab report shows.

You'll get back on track once you're home. I'm bouncing between 125-128lbs on any given day, and go for my 18 month f/u labs on the 20th.
