If you are on a PPI, do you have constipation issues? A poll of sorts.

Hey "B"....constipation came on very early.  I just thought it had to do with eating next to nothing. My even thought calcium had something to do with it.  My doc just said to up fiber which I started to do by additng Milson's raw unprocessed bran to my yogurt.  It did help!  I do currently wear tennis shoes during a difficult BM so I get good traction...LOL.  I started taking 2 PPI yesterday (one in the Am and one in the PM to see if it helps with the hungries).  So far, I'm impressed but won't process my full report for a week or 2.  Now, I read your article above and it scared the crap out of me.  I went to a surgeon to discuss surgery because I was having high calcium labs (not high enough for surgery, thank God) and mentioned my VSG and no-malabsorption issues and he said they are still researching this with VSG.  Yikes!  My labs are good.  I only take 1 multi vit, 1 B12 and 1-2 thousand vit D.  I stopped the calcium supplement.  My bone density came back great!
Now, you got me thinking about the Prilosec.....Just stop it!  Love you girlie!

Funny, I must be a mutant lol. Like thats surprising to anyone who knows me at all. I had not really had constipation with my PPI at all. I was on Omeprazole since about 2 months out. Since on that I had never been constipated. Now I have quit taking it about 2 weeks ago I have had some issues. I wonder if it depends on which PPI, or maybe it is just me?

I take Prevacid every other day and don't have any problems at all with constipation. I didn't have problems when I was on Protonix either, but this has never been an issue for me.

well we just get right down to the nuts and bolts in this group don't we. I always tended toward the "c" problem all my life (solution: morning coffee on an empty stomach). Took prilosec for a few years before wls and for 6 month after. Had the typical post surgical problems with this requiring use of enema a couple of times. Milk of magnesia works the best for occasional problems now. But I also eat 3 or 4 prunes every morning as per suggestion of dr. Jossart who thinks thats better than all kinds of fiber supplements.  So I don't know if the ppi contributed to this issue or not. But it is better these days and being off all ppi drugs now may be part of it. But ditto the prunes which I actually like and which are low calorie though kind of high carb.

So lady you may need to wear a bicycle helmet when attending to this business if you fear head injury. At least take a long book with you - like War and Peace. And if you find yourself in a real bad way on occasion, go get the fleet enema in the single use little squirt bottles. the relief is well worth the indignity of purchase and use. D

I like prunes too!

I already bought a box of smooth move and have it steeping for later. An hour longer of no hongries is not worth an aneurysm or wearing a helmet to go to the bathrom!!  :}

Lucky I did not need an enema!  PHew!

Yes, I do have problems with constipation and you know that I do take a PPI.  I use a few stool softeners and prunes every day.  However, my constipation did not start until I was about 4 months out and I've been taking Prevacid since day one.

Also, I've heard that all the calcium can cause it too...so I dunno...
