If you are on a PPI, do you have constipation issues? A poll of sorts.

I had not ever been on a PPI since surgery. Dr. A sent us home with acid reducers, I took that until the prescription was gone, and never had issue. I get hungry every 3 hours, but did not figure that was unreasonable, since I was not eating so much at each meal.

With our talk about hunger and whatnot, I took on the experiment to see if PPIs would help space out my hunger.  Tuesday I started with a hunger/PPI experiment.  I can say that my hunger is spaced out a bit more, closer to 4 hours than the 3, which is groovy to know.

I have at least 4 ounces of cheese every day.  I have for... I dunno..  months.  I eat the same thing every day unless we go out for dinner, and so I have eaten the same thing that I have eaten for months all week long, with the exception of eliminating the cheese on Tuesday for a few meals, but then added it back because my calories needed upping.

Allrighty.  I have *never* had issue with constipation, not once since surgery.  I always attributed it to the papaya enzyme and probiotics after I first had surgery, but I have not utilized them since last December.

Today, it was way more effort than it ever has been to empty my bowels.  The ONLY thing that has changed, is that I started on a PPI Tuesday. I have had the same amount of water, food, same EXACT food, same amount of exercise as I have been having for MONTHS, and have never had issue with constipation.

Googled up PPIs and constipation and there it is, in black and white.

Soo!  My question to you, my lovelies, if you care to fess up is - how many of you have constipation issues?  And are you using PPIs?

Inquring minds and sore bottoms want to know!  Having another hour before I get hungry is an okay thing - but so is not having to spend so much time worrying if I am going to have an aneurysm or have to install a Toilet Belt so I do not pass out from a vasovagal reaction and crack my head on my new glass tile floor!!

Thank you ever so much for your input!

Edit to add - if you have constipation and are not on a PPI or are on a PPI and do not have constipation and are willing to share, that information is good too!  yall are also welcome to PM me if you do not care to share your angry anus stories! *insert angry anus emoticon here :}*

Thank you again!  I am just trying to see if we can find reasons/relief for our sistahs and bruthas with the constipation issues!

Yes, and yes! I take 2 protonix daily. And daily fiber (Costco Fiber Gummies-yum) and 2 softeners each evening and Miralax maybe once every week or 10 days....I have always had a tendency towards constipation, but it is worse post surgery for sure..I was taking one protonix before surgery and for a long time post, btw. The problem got worse after surgery with the same amount of PPI, but I ascribe that to not eating enough and getting less fiber from food. Adding the 2nd dose of Protonix  didn't make it any worse....

For most the folks who have answered me, LIzanne, that seems to be the pattern, that it has gotten worse after surgery or they never had the constipation factor before and now they seriously have it after surgery.

I cannot believe though, that nobody on the main board or the DSers want to talk ****e with me!? :}

I definitely have a constipation problem that I didn't have before wls.  I take 2 Nexium a day.

i have had severe constipation since surgery, so bad that i had to give up walking for awhile to allow the hemroids a chance to heal and not get agrivated..

I did not have it prior to surgery, when i was on my ppl, but even after giving it up the ppi i still have had problems, i tend to chew on fiber tablets, but flaxseed works well too. so for me its not the ppi .    interesting that you found the ppi exteneded your hunger i think ill go back on mine.
if need be ill add more flaxseed.

I would definitely add more flax!  Whoo boy!

But yea - it *has* extended the time between hongries.  So, that's definitely something!  Will not help with protein absorption, but definitely does with the hongires for me.

but if its keeping you fuller longer, it might help with the absorption too? as its staying in the system longer??
'just a thought

I doubt it, only because one of the side effects of PPIs -  equals less stomach acid, equals? Malabsorption!!
