Warm protein coco - a good thing

So most of us have had the Heath wise hot coco protein mix from Nashua Nutrition. Its a great product as you can make it really hot and get 15 g in for not too many calories. I used to depend on this a lot at the end of the day when my protein count was low and yet i couldn't really eat much or stand the thought of a regular cold protein drink.

But the product is expensive when you have to pay  shipping so it seemed to me there must be an alternative. I have read the way others make protein coco with sugar free swiss miss and it sounds good but I haven't done it. So last night I was chilled in our pacific northwest climate and decided to experiement with hot coco from protein powder. You all know I use costco chocolate flavored protein powder which i enhance with some unsweetened high quality coco powder. maybe a heaping spoonful mixed in dry to a cup of the protein powder. Really makes the stuff taste better - less icky sweet and more adult dark chocolate taste. I keep a plastic bag with the protein powder and coco mixed together and then make my shakes from that.

So anyway, last night i took what amounted to about a half scoop of the protein powder/coco combo (lost that scoop somehow) and mixed it with a whisk into about a half cup of room temp water. then i heated up a half cup skim milk in the microwave until pretty hot (1 min 30 sec) and then slowly poured that and whisked it into the room temp protein/water mixture. Didn't get any curdling and the result was a warm, not hot, cup of coco. I microwaved it for another 20 seconds and got it suitably warm without any curdling. Anyway, it made an excellent cup of warm coco and got me about 16 g protein and 140 or so calories. could be made just with water too.

I think I will be doing this a lot now as our rainy season sets in and I find myself wanting a warm evening drink. so try it and cheers!  gonna post this on the main forum too. D

sounds good, i was just making a non fat hot cocoa and using one premier protein shake as a creamer if i wanted a protein cocoa, it did not seem to curdle adding to boiling hot cocoa and cooled it down enough to drink, but then i havent found a powder i liked.

That's really good to know. I have some that I bought from my band doctor. It's Proti but it's expensive. I'll have to try that. I've been meaning to buy some sf swiss miss.

This is very similar to how I make my protein green tea.  I use boiling water to fill up half a cup full of tea and let that brew for a bit.  Then I put lukewarm water and 2 scoops Isopure vanilla powder into my blender.  Then I poor that over the green tea, and it makes a nice warm creamy protein green tea mixture that's good for weight loss and good for keeping the chill off too.

I have this every morning.  I don't particularly like the taste of plain green tea.  But you can also do this with other kinds of tea such as chai tea, vanilla tea, etc.  They key is to not use ho****er with your protein powders, to mix it first with lukewarm water, then after it is thoroughly mixed then you can add the ho****er or tea.

Diane, I do the chai tea every morning and it is sooo yummy.  I use 2 scoops of vanilla protein and it's wonderful.  And I add extra cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg!
