Do you stop eating when you are satiated?

I always find it difficult to know exactly when I've had enough.  I do get signals such as a runny nose and occasional sneeze like most others, most of the time, but often it occurs way too fast, like after one slice of luncheon meat or something like that.  I tried to eat instinctually when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full.  I know I'm not being very clear here.  I guess what I'm partly trying to say is, that my stomach feels full and satisfied (or overfull) only a few minutes after I've finished eating much of the time.  For example, I just finished lunch.  While I was eating, I kept thinking I'm still hungry, but only had a certain portion size and didn't eat more.  A few minutes after I felt quite comfortably full.  I ate over about 20 minutes, so I don't think I was rushing.  I have a fear of stretching my stomach by getting my full signal too late.  Also, I'm sure I will be hungry in another 30-60 minutes, so I often wonder if I've eaten enough to keep the hungries away for 3 hours or so.

Can anyone relate (or even understand what I'm talking about, lol)?

Oh Yes Sandy, I can relate!  Sometimes just a few slices of lunch meat****s it and other times "not so much".  I find that when I'm less distracted while eating that I feel more satisfied and with less.  I'm gonna try and practice this today.  My bariatric doc just reminded me eat 5-6 meals/day.  I just had a hard boiled egg for snack and had greek yogurt around 8am.  I usually start my day with expresso & soy milk.  I'm tracking food again which keeps me grounded.
I worry about stretching my tum, but don't think that happens when I feel full on 1-3 slices of deli lunch meat.  Love you and keep on sharing.
p.s.  never hear of the running nose/sneeze thing before....but just noticed my nose is running and I just finished my egg?

I still struggle with this. It seems even harder the further out I get, because the amount of food I can eat from day to day varies so much more than when I was earlier out.

Sometimes I eat and know it should be enough, but my stomach just feels like there's nothing in it. So I eat a bit more and then regret it because I suddenly feel stuffed. I despise that feeling, so I chew gum to get the food to move through faster so that I don't have that overly full feeling in my stomach.

But some days I will feel stuffed on a slice of lunch meat, and other days I can eat two slices plus a slice of cheese (or more) and not feel especially full. It drives me crazy. lol

I just eat measured amounts at home.  When we go out, I eat until I am satisfied, and know that the minute I think "okay, just one more bite and I am done" that I need to NOT take that last bite.

I do not get hiccups, nose runs, little belches, tiny sighs, reindeer triptrapping on my roof, or nothing!

But when we go out, unless I am just having balls to the wall carbfest - tortilla chips or onion rings, I really mostly just get a meaty something and have already eyeballed how much I think is appropriate to eat.

I tend to take smaller bites too, so I can eat nearly as long as my dining partners.

I think when im out its the hardest to  judge mostly its ok but occassionally i get that feeling where i start to feel full, so i stop, but then 10 mins later my stomach is in pain and i know ive over eaten...

portion size is an issue that all of us probably had long before having wls so its not surprising that we still have it. I make up my plate with portions that are designated by my program - ie 4 ounces protein, a few veggies or fruit. I have gotten into the habit of using the smaller sized salad plates rather than a dinner plate. they seem like a trash can lid to me now and i get unhappy if i don't have my medium plate. don't have very many in my dish set but as a ceramic artist, I am gonna make my own one of these days!

So I eat more based on the portions i set out (don't weight or formally measure everything - just eyeball it) and eat that. Sometimes i do find myself getting too full before I have finished my meal. the signals are just a full bubbly feeling and sometimes a bit of runny/nose or the "slime" effect. Sometimes this is just due to having eaten too fast and if i wait 20 minutes I can finish my portion. Often do that.

I do think its really important to not get out excess amounts of food and then just keep eating until you feel full. this used to get me in trouble preop. have really changed that attitude. one of my surgeon's many instructions was to not put excess amounts on your plate. I really think this is important. If I am still  hungry after having what i set out, then I can get a little more or eat some almonds or something. usually not a problem.

I feel very lucky not to have the problem of getting hungry again every hour and don't know why this is the case. could be the small bougie, following surgeons instructions closely or just plain luck. also have really kept off the carbs. no bread or pasta or rice and only very occasional whole grains like quinoa or oatmeal.  I think following my surgeon's low carb rules throughout my weight loss phase served me well because not only did it facilitate the weight loss, it helped me break that habit and think of carbs as the enemy. of course, it helps that my husband is a low carb person and we don't have kids that have to be fed a greater variety of things. and my thanksgiving guests are going to be eating reduced carb stuffing next thursday. Just going to use whole grain bread and cut up low carb tortillas as the stuffing with more celery and vegetables than usual. bet no one notices anyting. I will certainly eat a spoon or two with gravy which will be the real deal gravey but i know sleevie won't permit me to eat a big bowl full like I used to. D

I've had trouble since the beginning where if I eat until I feel full at the table, I am miserable 20 min
later. I have to eye ball what I know is a portion for me, and not eat one bite more, even if I don't feel full. I'll feel over full in 20 min.

You have to find your "Pocket"

Try eating less and eat slower..... Than see how you feel 20 minutes later......

You may have to eat more times a day with smaller meals????

Hope this helps.

When I eat at home, I am very good at judging what will satiate me without filling me up to uncomforableness...

I eat and can judge really well when i am getting full and I stop...

And it is not just me eye balling what I know I can eat, hiubby has a knack for doing it also.  He will serve me sometimes and 99% of the time he gets it just right, like to the bite... If either of us go over it is usually by a bite or two and he or the dogs eat that little bit for me...

I rarely over eat at home, and when I do, I can't get my water in for quite awhile after, and it does not feel very comfortable.  I don't like the feeling, so I make sure it does not happen very often...  normally only happens with something really delicious, and I throw caution to the wind.

I can now eat at home, at a friends house, at a restaurant, and not overeat.  I am getting really good a judging the size of my tummy...  I also know if I pig out on treats or a healthy snack, there goes the next meal...

Hugs,
