Hello fellow Surgery Sisters!  I just want to take a moment and congratulate you on your decision to commit to a healthier life through weight loss surgery!  I, like you all, have battled my weight for my entire adult life.  I know the physical, emotional, and psycological tole that this battle can have on us.  I know, personally, this choice was not an easy decision to make. I know we all come from various backgrounds and bring with us a plethora of experiences.  Please take a moment and share some of them with us in this section by introducing yourself!

Hello everyone!  My name is Faye!  I am 38, married, proud mom of 4!

My battle is probably not unlike yours!  I was active and normal sized in high school.  I loved to be active and participate in sports, predominatly, long distance running!  I got married right out of high school and gained weight at an alarming rate.  I subsequently gave birth to 4 babies and from time to time, I would launch a weight loss campaign and lose a few pounds.  At 28, I finished up my baby years with the birth of my last baby, and I decided it was time to get serious and take my body back.  It took a year to really get motivated, but that motivation was intesified by a divorce from my husband of 12 years!  I got to work, working with a trainer, a Dr. and a Dietician, I managed to lose my first large amount of 105 pounds.  It was hard work!  I decided I had a passion for health and fitness and launched my education in health promotion.  Needless to say, my weight crept back up after a couple of years, and after I remarried.  Every year, I would wage a new war!  I would educate myself as to all the new fitness and diet ideas out there and apply, apply, apply!  I would spend hours a day at the gym, working my body to exhaustion.  I would spend every waking moment thinking and reading and researching how I could be successful.  The next 8 years was a ammusement park ride of ups and downs with my weight!

Finally, this past year my weight became completely out of control and I had no strength to keep fighting.  My weight went up and up and up until I reached my pre-surgery, all-time high of 310 pounds!

Lucky for me, I found out my insurance was starting to offer WL surgery coverage starting in 2012!  I jumped on that information and quickly got my stuff together to submit to insurance as soon as the new year came.  I suppose it was helpful that I had many documented attempts and my weights were all over the place.  It was not hard hard to get approved.  I got approved in a week!  So, here I am, 4 days pre-op, full of emotions.  Joy, concern, fear, are all part of what I feel right now.  I am overall, very excited and I look forward to my new path working towards a fit me!

Hi I'm new, pre op. I had my first appt at the wls clinic. Had the EKG, blood work, etc  Have the psych eval on Aug 2. Still need to have the upper gi and chest xray. I go back to appt #2 on July 27. My insurance requires lots of red tape stuff so I won't be having surgery until late Sept or Oct. I am trying to change some of my ways already. Giving up coffee, slowly--down to 1 cup, no carbonated stuff, drinking the water, having a protein shake for breakfast everyday and need to add for lunch soon too. I just need to find something I like. I don't like Atkins and find the light muscle milk ones ok but they only have 15 g of protein. I haven't started exercising yet but I figured I'd get the diet going and start walking/biking next week. One thing at a time.

I noticed this group isn't too active although people are joining. I figured I'd kick it off but posting here.

I'm 53, a mother of 2 teenage boys, have been overweight most of my adult life but it's gotten much worse in the last few years. In 2007-8, I lost 85 lbs doing lc and did great. Said I wasn't going to gain again. Yeah, right!!! Ha, ha --guess we all know what happened then, huh? Yep, here I am even heavier. WTH???? On Monday I was 297.5, haven't actually ever seen 300 and hope not to. I'm trying to lose---my dr office wants me to lose 15 by surgery but I'd really like to lose more like 25 by surgery. Time will tell. I'm only 5'3" so that weight makes me look like a bowling ball. I essentially do nothing outside of my house that I don't have to do. My quality of life sucks--plain and simple. I really dislike myself and what I have done to myself.

Come in and introduce yourself. Maybe we can help each?

Hi Mary!  I too just joined the group.  Congratulations on making such an important decision!  I just finished all of my appointments.  The only appointments I have left are meeting with the surgeon on Wednesday the 18th and the dietician on the 26th.  I will find out my surgery date this wednesday after I meet with the surgeon!!!  I can hardly wait.  I was where you are at less than a month ago - it goes so fast!  Congratulations again!

Oh Jennifer, how exciting. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm excited, scared, happy, sad---you know the feelings. What surgery are you going to have? I'm preferring the sleeve myself. Please let me know how you make out and when your surgery date is. Woohoo, I'm rooting for you.

I am having the Roux-en-Y.  I leaned toward the sleeve but I was worried about the risk of leaks taking longer to heal.  I think I also leaned towards the bypass because it's been done so much more than the sleeve, but that is me - More power to you for the sleeve!!!

Thanks for the encouragement!  I am really excited and can hardly wait for my appointment on Wednesday.  Can't believe it could be as early as July 31.  Crazy!  Definitely a roller coaster of emotions, but totally worth it.  I will keep you updated and you do the same!!!  I'm rooting for you as well ;-)

That's my baby boy, Max.  He just turned 2 last month.  He is my world.  Him and my husband certainly make my decision for surgery easier - they are both worth living for and living healthy!!!
