Topic: No speed demon, but putting on miles
Today was my long run day. I was supposed to go 45 minutes. I went to the McAlpine Creek Greenway today, which is packed gravel with lots of sticks and gumball tree pods and goose poop. I did pretty well, had to walk the huge hill and stop once to tie my shoe, but overall, ran the whole 5K distance. Pace was slow, 14:44 but that's better than my last attempt at 5K which was 16:03, so I'm improving. No speed demon, just putting on the miles.

Pasta dinners are a thing of the past. To incorporate more carbs - I have added a few more fruits and veggies to my diet (per my nutritionist) She also has me eating an evening snack - last night cottage cheese with fruit. I am not use to eating that late and am really having to force myself to get it down. But the point of the evening snack is that it is ready energy for the next morning (when I train) - then after training - I have a snack with a ration of 3 carbs:1 protein. An example for me is 1/2 protein bar, latte and 1/2 banana (takes a while to get all this down). So I am eating 6 times a day - but the important thing is to listen to my stomach and don't overfill my pouch. So quantity is not as important as ratio for me.
I am 2 years out - I do not eat any pasta, bread, rice, crackers, etc. These are things that we never need to add back into our diets.
Your needs will be different than mine - you are still in the weight loss phase. I am in the maintance phase.

Fantastic. I'm so glad you were able to complete the distance without the rain. It's so great the wind was at your back on the homeward bound trip. It also sounds like you're a ahead of schedule training-wise as your race isn't until mid April, that's a whole month away.
The knee sounds problematic. Since you already have a brace, I'm assuming you've encountered knee pain before. Do you think the new location of the pain indicates a new problem? Do you or have you seen an orthopedic Dr?
Are the supplements ones the nutritional coach recommended? Or ones you've taken before? I was on Runner's World this weekend looking at pre-race nutrition recommendations for 5K's. There's no pasta dinners for us RNY runners are there?
Carolyn, You're doing great, keep up the enthusiasm, because I'm catching some of it.

Yesterday morning the sun was shining and I actually got sunburned during my run (tank tops in March - nice). Last night it started to rain.... I was hoping that the rain would let up for a while in the morning so that I would not have a wet run - looked online and weather report - rain all day. Well I woke up this morning to cold ****alifornia cold 40F), overcast sky's and wet sidewalks, but it was NOT currently raining. Jinx (my boxer) and I grabbed our gear and headed out hoping to beat the rain - It was beautiful and everything smelled so clean. The wind was like a wall in my face that at times I felt like I had to wade through - but I had a very nice run to my turn around point. We started back and suddenly I started to have pain on the outside of my right knee. Never had pain in this particular spot? It definitely slowed my pace on the way back, but the wind was now at my back, helping me along. A few times the pain in my knee was really sore, and I had to walk down the hills as it really hurt going down hill. When I saw Sunshine Tech - I was so relieved as I knew it was only 2 miles left and I could manage that!
In the end - my Nike sensor said 11.88 miles - time 2hrs 18min - pace 11:36 - my Nike tends to run a little high (needs re-calibrated, which I will do next weekend on my 10K) so I would say it was probably closer to the 10.5 miles that I mapped out, but since that is the way the crow flys, maybe 11???
I am very proud of my accomplishment - I made it home and felt great other than my sore knee - looks like a brace on Tuesday's run. I iced when I got home and will need to ice a few more times as it still hurts.
I know that my 1/2 Marathon is easily within my reach - only 3K more to added to my longest run and I will be there!
Supplements during the run - Eco Water 32oz, G2 16 oz, 3 shot blocks. I bought some Nuun and had it yesterday after my run, but was concerned about its effervescent quality - had no ill effects yesterday but was not going to try it on my long run. I will use that instead of Eco Water on Tuesday.
And the best news - the rain never showed - so my entire run was dry and cool!!!!
Happy running!!!

I am training for a 1/2 marathon in April. New shoes can cause problems - definately want to break them in before a run :-) my current pair I bought right before a 5k and the first time I wore them was on the run.... caused a cut on the top of my foot just above my sock - which has never happended again - must not have had the tonge straight.

10 miles, I'm in awe. I'm not sure I'd ever get to that point. My interim goal is the 5 mile Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. We'll see where it goes from there. What is your goal? Are you training for a 1/2 or full marathon?
I just got new shoes, maybe that's why they were bothering me Thursday.
I went to New Balance and they put me on their analyzer and said I have high arches and over pronate. So they talked me into some orthotics. Well the orthotics really push my feet to the outside and I feel like I'm walking on a ridge, one foot on each side. Very uncomfortable. So yesterday, I took the orthotics out, and the run felt much better. I also bought new socks at the running store. Don't remember the brand name, but expensive. Well they feel slippery, like my feet keep moving around and slipping in them. I bought 3 pair at $10 each so I guess I'm stuck with them (of course already threw out the wrapers, receipt, etc.)
I have a pair of Brooks shoes that I bought at a boutique running store in Birmingham AL two years ago that are my favorites. But they're pretty worn, so I slipped the orthotics in them. Made them feel much cushier. The New Balance folks said that the brand name models of shoes in regular stores (like at Foot Locker or Dick's) are the low end models and that the running stores carry the more high end shoes that last longer and have better support. Hmmm, might just be a justifying sales pitch. I saw that Dicks is now carrying Brooks brand and they didn't seem much cheaper than the running store.
Good luck on your run, have fun.

I bet you can! You will be surprised at how fast you will build stamina and speed.
Today for me - 4.6 jog - tomorrow 10 miles - will be my longest run yet and I am hoping to do it in under 2 1/2 hours. But will be happy just to finish, regardless of how long it takes :-) One step closer to my goal!
Keep up the training - you are doing awesome! And make sure that you have a good pair of running shoes! This is an expense to improve your health - don't cut corners - find a pair that really fit well and support you well. I use to be a Nike girl - but my feet are different now (130 pounds gone will do that) and Nike does not fit right. I switched to Asics and love my current pair. Once I am done with these - I am going to go to a running shop and have me stride/feet measured by the pros and get a really nice pair that will make my feet dream! I am interested to find out my pronation (over, under, normal) and to learn more about my stide.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Topic: Pace yourself
So my last run, intervals, felt just awful. I hurt, I was slow, I couldn't breathe, I hated my shoes....
Today, I ran 2 miles, and it felt great. Best pace yet, 12:44. My goal is to run my first 5K at 13:00 minute mile (41 minutes). So now that goal seems do-able, and maybe my goal pace is too slow.
Anyway I feel proud and strong, and ready for my next training session on Monday, where I have to run 45 minutes straight. Bet I can make the 3 mile plus mark.

I do not do hot yoga, though I have some friends who do. The heat would kill me - I get very dissy when it is to hot - my blood pressure is very low (sometimes as low as 80/40...) and the heat causes me distress - I dehydrate too quickly. Even doing yard work is difficult in the heat. Living in California - summers can be hot.... all of my running this summer will be early!
I have been practicing yoga for about 10 years - though it has been much easier the last 2 years :-) The good thing about yoga is it is perfect no matter where you are fitness wise. You adjust the practice to your body and fitness level and don't ever feel like you need to compare yourself to others, just do the best that your body can do and strive for improvement over time. I remember times where I felt like I spent more time in childs pose than any other - now I rarely take childs even when the class does - I choose to stay in down dog or do chataranga because my fitness level is higher.
Have a good weekend.
