I was thinking last night after the chat, in order for us to FEEL more like a team it might be fun to have a team goal.  We each have our racing goas for the year, but what is the team's goals?  Maybe that can be a specific number of total races by all members, or a mileage plateau.  just a thought.  Like the shirts, very simple idea but I do best with goals.

Scott.  IMHO I think it starts with the shirts.  Once the members have one in hand and run local races with them on, they will take ownership in the team and most of what you want to accomplish will be easier.  I know that it sounds stupid and the idea has been blown off before but that's how I feel.

Looks like it was a fun chat.

Thanks Scott,

It still gives us over a year to plan for 2011

Just a word of caution.  The Disney half usually sells out in mid march so there is about 6 weeks to get into that one.

Yes I mean 2011 that give people enough time to start to get their head around it, make plans for vacation and savings for the event things like that.
I would like a whole list so perhaps we could plan ahead for maybe the next 5 years.
2011 Disney World (East Coast)
2012 Wildflower (West Coast)
2013 Something in the middle of the country
2014 Something in the Northern part of the country
2015 something in the Souther part of the country.

Something like that.  It doesn't have to be in that order, but that was what I was thinking.
By moving it around the country we can get the most diverse participation, everyone would have a chance to go to one of the major team events.

I know this is late, not sure who will actually even see this but here it goes:
1/2 marathon @ Flying Pig
sprint triathlon in early June
June 27  Ironman Ceour d'Alaine
1 or 2 potential sprint triathlons in July
Detroit Marathon October

Considerably lighter than last year, but getting married this summer + an full Ironman at the beginning of the summer limits my opportunities.  I'll miss doing the extra sprint triathlons -- they're not super taxing, but I won't miss trying to do 2 HIM + 3 full marathons -- that was a bit much!

 Hey,
Thanks for posting this!  I tried to log in on my iPhone but that was a no-go.  Fiancee and I were doing a tasting at the banquet hall last night.  Hopefully I can join you all one of these nights!

I don't think we can make decisions in Chat. Some of us can never make the current chat time. Does that mean we get no say in how this group is run? That's not right. A group like this has to allow for the people who only come by once or twice a week to have their say as well. We have a message board and the ability to post polls. Why not use it?

As for this group, we started it to spread the word about how an active lifestyle combined with WLS can combat obesity. The races were a means to an end because they get attention.

I am against having any criteria for belonging to the group. We need to remember where we came from. A year ago, I had never run more than 2 miles at a time. My first 5k was coming up and I was scared to death. Now I'm signed up for an Ironman.

I don't think I was any less a legitimate a racer a year ago than I am now. I was just at the beginning of the journey to be an endurance athlete. I think it's a bad idea to cut out people who are interested in racing just because they are starting out.

OTOH, I completely agree that we don't need another Exercise group on OH. The focus of this group should be on spreading the word of our mission via races and events. If people join who aren't interested in doing events, well, that's their prerogative, but their needs shouldn't take precedence over the mission of the group.

To that end, we have business to accomplish that we need to get cracking on. We need to get the web site up. We need to get our bios collected and on it. We need to find some sponsors. We need to set up a group calendar. We need to decide on a logo. We need to design a racing kit. We were invited to do the Muddy Buddy and there has been no follow-up on that.

These things are essential tasks that need to be done or we are just another OH message board and not an active group spreading a message through the activities of our members.

When you say "next" year do you mean 2011?

I think we should do something with some choices. Like a running race that has 5K to Half-marathon distances. Or a triathlon that has Sprint and Olympic distance.

I also think we shouldn't do something majorily challenging ... like a marathon or an Ironman ... so we can include as many people as possible.

Disneyland or WDW events are a good idea for reasons Scott gave. Something in Las Vegas would be good too because it's a cheap place to fly to and to stay.

I'd also like to throw out Wildflower Triathlon Festival. It's a whole weekend so people could pick how long they wanted to say for and has Sprint, Olympic and Long courses. But it would work best for people on the West Coast.
