Starting the Journey

Hi Everyone-

I'm new to the OH forum, although I've been reading posts for a while now.  I have done a lot of research before deciding the sleeve is for me.  I've had good weight loss success on my own (lost 85 pounds in high school and kept it off for 20 years)...but then it got really high (288 was highest) then I lost 88 of that, only to be up another 35.  It's a constant struggle and I think of the sleeve as a tool that will help....especially as menopause is around the corner and likely a time it will make weight loss even harder.

We are frequent travellers to Costa Rica where we would like to retire, so I decided to book my surgery there. I'm scheduled for 10/31 so I just barely qualify for this group--just slipped in under the wire!

Our plan is to leave here the 30th, and then surgery is the 31st.  I just talked to the nurse there yeterday and she told me about a drain and the tight opaque socks (up to the thights) --did all of you have both of those things?  I'm starting my pre-op diet on the 18th, and will need some strength for that as I seem to have this mentality of "eat all I want" now b/c I can't in the future. Has anyone else had that?

I'd like to hear about everyone's experiences--the good, the bad, the ugly.  I've only had two very small surgeries before so I'm a bit nervous!  Good Luck and Hi to everyone here--I'm glad to ge a part of this forum!  -Maria

Hi Maria,

Welcome.  Make sure you check out the vsg forum.  You may want to post your questions there as well, due to this one being brand new.  I am scheduled for surgery 10/17.  I am starting my liquid diet on Monday, so yes I want everything this weekend!  It doesn't make sense, because we can eat after surgery.  It just won't be for a while and it will never be the same amount again.  I have blogged about my experiences along the way and will continue to add as surgery approaches and passes if you are interested in wadding through my brain...lol.  Best of luck on your surgery in Costa Rica.  I can't wait till I start traveling to amazing places.  My first trip will be when I reach goal...maybe in 1 year to 1 1/2 years.  As for the drain, my surgeon doesn't use them unless necessary.  A lot of people have drains post op.  It just helps with draining excess fluid.  As for the socks, they are to help keep circulation flowing and keep blood clots minimized along with swelling.  I've never had surgery before, so I'm scared stupid over all of this.  I just made out my will and have to get it notarized.  I think that is the scariest piece of paper I have ever read...next to the 20 page document I had to read and sign for this surgery.  I'm super nervous, so you aren't alone.  Good luck to you!

Welcome! I too am being sleeved on Oct 31st.  I start my liquids on 10/17/11 and feel the same way.  Like I need to eat as much of all my favs as I want.  Don't know why.  It's not like I want ever be able to eat them again... I guess its all part of that head hunger and emotions we have to learn to deal with.  Best of luck to you on your journey!!
