Topic: RE: what have you given up to be Obese?
I have given up promotions at work and advancement opportunities because I didn't "fit" the position. I have given up roller coaster rides.  I have passed on plane trips to visit my family because I feel uncomfortable encroaching on the space of the person next to me-- electing to drive instead and spending time in a car that could have been better spent with loved ones.  I have never tried certain adventures like parasailing because of fear the that a harness wouldn't fit.

Nicole, thank you for posting this.  As I await surgery, I have spent a lot of time continually wrestling in my mind with the pros and cons of surgery.  This helps to remind me that some benefits are priceless and that I have chosen the right path.

I just want to feel like I am important and what I think and do means something.  I want to be "normal"  and not just be the fat girl that doesn't do as much as everyone else.  I want to feel good about myself.

Think about it, when we live the life of an obese person we give things up. Relationships? Dreams? Adventures?  Health?

What have you given up that you want to get back or have for the first time??

Topic: Hello
Hello everyone. My name is Sharon and I hope it is ok that I joined this group as I couldn't find one for Reading.
I live in Lancaster county but, I intend to have surgery at the Reading Hospital with Dr. Ku.
I can not go to the Lancaster group becuase my insurance only approves centers of excellence and Lancaster doesn't have that yet.
I attended a seminar a while back with Dr. Brader and he seems great. I found out at that time that they didn't take my insurcance.
I am looking to get approved for Lapband surgery. I have a consult  with Dr. Ku on 11/3 and I am hoping things with progress quickly after that.
I did a diet for 8 months with my family doc. I am hoping they take that for the required doctor supervised diet.
Well it is nice to find a place where there are people who know what I am going through.

Thank you Nicole.  I am definitely scared.  :-)  I have perfect confidence in Dr. Brader and really like him and his staff, so I have no concerns there.  I have not heard anyone with regrets, other than wishing they had done it sooner, so I know that means a lot.

Topic: RE: Challenges
My BIGGEST challenge is "Grazing"... I'll stick to my plan throughout the day... because I only take a certain amount of food with me... I'll occassionally (rarely) go through McD's and get an ice cream cone... 150 calories... it's when I go home that it starts... I've got trigger foods divided out into baggies (serving sizes) ... I'm not gaining... but I'm certainly not losing... and I'm far from goal... I'm still OBESE... I've got about 7lbs to be OVERWEIGHT!!!!

Thanks for offering to be my angel......that would be wonderful. Let me know what contact information you need and I'll send it via OH email. It's almost time for my surgery and I'm a bunch of nerves, but I'm also very excited. I started trying different protein drinks/powders and I'm going to start buying items from my suggested post-op shopping list this coming weekend.  The countdown has begun........19 days to go.

Liz,

I know this question was directed to Mel., but I can answer. The meetings are from 7-8:30, sometimes they run a little long because the last 30 mins we split into groups. Sometimes they split up by surgery (lap band vs. bypass), other times by post-op and pre-op. BTW....good luck with your appointment tomorrow.
