Mediterranean Dietary Approach
Calories in, Calories out
Just a thought, and I'd like to get your reactions ....
I'm working with a group of menopausal women in a research study on our Mediterranean dietary approach. This group, perhaps more than any other but your own!!, has been told that maintaining their weight and health is simple ... it's all about "calories in, calories out".
That sounds as simple, as it is simplistic.
That's because there are so many other aspects of weight control that have nothing at all to do with calories!! No wonder so many people "follow the rules" of someone's diet, and have a hard time with it. But YOU are not the problem ... the strategy was a failing strategy to begin with.
No wonder our culture of health is ushering us over a dietary cliff. For example:
Stress contributes to weight problems (it's zero calories);
Calcium contributes to weight control (it's zero calories);
Diet soda is associated with weight gain even more than regular soda (despite being ... zero calories).
If you eat very low fat foods, your body with go into starvation mode and HOLDS ON TO your fat, even though you've cut down on calories.
So here's my question to you ... and I'd like to hear from your friends too!!
Our Culture of Health tells us that weight control is a simplistic equation between calories in and calories out. Have you seen the same thing in your own life? Other than this, how else has our American Culture of Health mislead us into our current weight and health problems?
