Lose Weight Find Life

Dear me,
I want you to keep this letter close so that you can read it at anytime. Do you remember when you were at your highest weight? It seemed impossible to lose any weight. When your surgeon suggested losing 25 pounds, it might as well have been 250 pounds. And surgery seemed so far off.
Where are we now? You can walk 15 minutes -3 times a day. Yes, your back hurts. But you push through that mild annoyance and get that daily movement in. Everyday, you are stronger, and more fit. Every footstep you walk gets you closer to your goal of 25 pounds lost.
Don't give up. Keep up with what you are doing. Stay away from sugar and white flour. Remember this morning when you had pancakes, and how awful you felt, having to take a nap because you had no energy. It was a waste of your life. Work on getting protein in to build muscle and feed your body. Drink those fluids. Keep practicing for what is to come after surgery.
This is for life. This is not a diet. This is you now. Your new life includes movement everyday of your life. Your new life includes feeding your body the food it needs. And most importantly, your new life includes loving yourself and acknowledging small successes. Its those small successes that will add up and create the new you. You may not be perfect, but i want you to vow to do your best.
Lastly, LOVE YOURSELF! You may not want to exercise today, but do it anyway. You'll feel great afterwards and very proud that you pushed through.
love,
me. 4-25-10 378 pounds
For years, I've had a bedtime snack of a protein bar. I still log my food and when I really thought about it, the protein bars weren't exactly a snack but caloric-wise almost like a meal. I LOVE the Power Crunch bars and have bought them and had one daily for a long time. While absolutely delicious, they have 210 calories in them. The fish or chicken I have for dinner doesn't have that many calories!! I changed to one that was 140-160 calories a few months ago. I noticed that I HAD to have this before I went to bed. The "HAD" to this situation concerned me a bit.
I've changed that habit from HAD to have it to having a piece of fruit. Okay, I know that it isn't exactly the same thing but it feels better to me. The HAD to have it was bothersome. Now that strawberries (one of my faves!) and other spring/summer fruits are more available, I am replacing that habit for my protein bar for awhile. I feel better physically and also mentally because I recognized that it could become a problem and now I'm in charge!!
Have a great weekend.

You received fantastic advice from other members. Your situation is very common. You know that you've changed but it takes family and friends sometimes a little longer. They are used to us being on a diet and then going off. Your niece might consider your surgery one of those diets and not understand.
Just like the other members have shared, I kinda took matters in my own hands to a degree. I had a family meeting and explained that the things we had been eating were not healthy and that we were going to make a bit of an adjustment in what we had in the house. My two sons were less than excited but when I stuck to my word and didn't buy or bring in junk (especially what I liked!), they didn't die and adjusted quite well LOL. Seriously, they were fine once they got used to it.
Another thing that I did was to ask them for their help. As you get further out, your food options will increase. Thankfully, you won't be on the Phase 3 for a long time so that day is soon. I found when I asked for their help and support, they were there for me and understood even more. You are absolutely not wrong for asking her to be supportive of you and eat that stuff elsewhere. My teenage son, after I asked for his help and support, ate things that he thought would be bothersome to me in the garage!!
I hope this helps! Congrats on your surgery!

I am Lisa, and I had an RNY the day after you did. Congratulations on your weight loss so far! That is fabulous! I haven't quite lost as much as much as you, but hopefully I will continue to drop.
I haven't started an exersize routine yet, but I have been preparing things. Have you started any yet? I am up in Northeastern Ohio so we don't get much of the nice weather that you probably get in Texas. It is just starting to get nice again here.
Well thank you for posting, it is exciting hearing from people whose surgeries are close to mine! Take care!
~Lisa.
I have lost 60lbs & very greatful & excited!
I must admit I feel so naive as I have been a member so very long I never knew there were groups to join... the day I joined here is the day I found out, maybe my brain or eyes were suffering from obesity aswell
I am so happy to be here & meet all you people, I am in South Texas by the way (been here for over 20yrs) anybody from South Texas? I am ooriginally from Miami, Fla (Homstead area)
Congrats to you on anniversary. The surgery is a piece a cake compared to dealing with the inner or inside stuff. That is something I am determined to get thru one way or the other. Thanks for this post. It reminds me I have to deal with the inner stuff to move forward and succeed permanently in my journey.
