Topic: A new beginning anytime
Do you remember the days of dieting.....it was always that we had to begin on "Monday" or "the first of the month" or some other arbitrary magic day of the week, number of the month or first of the year.  Now that we've given ourselves a new beginning by having WLS, EACH and EVERYDAY is a NEW DAY and a NEW BEGINNING and a NEW WAY to COMMIT.  In fact, we don't have to wait for any other time than right here and right now to commit.

Okay, so you made an unhealthy food choice.  So what, big deal!  With your next food choice, get right back on track by making a healthy choice.  Once you've done that, you are back on track and creating a wave of momentum in making healthy choices one after another.  We can't change what we ate before but we CAN change what we eat from there.  You are not what you ate in the past but you are what you eat today, right now and in the future.  One slip up doesn't define our WLS success.  Our choices that we make right now and in the future are under our control.  Don't focus on what you did (int he past), focus on what you are doing now and commit to those future choices and, to quote Nike, "Just Do It!"

WLS is a way of life and not just a short term solution to losing weight.  No more diets!  YEA!  Ask yourself where do you want to be in 5 years or 10 years?  The choices you make right now will make that goal a reality you will walk in those 5 or 10 years.

So......let's JUST DO IT together!

Weight Loss Surgery Daily Inspiration For May 1, 2010

Stay current.

You may be sick of reading up on the topics of WLS, nutrition, and exercise. But, continuing your education in these areas is important. Research on those topics is ongoing. New discoveries are being made daily; for example, unexpected vitamin deficiencies recently were discovered in some WLS patients.

Each phase of your recovery has its own problems and pitfalls. It's easy to get into the mindset that you know it all and become less vigilant about your health. Staying current on WLS-related topics only reinforces the good habits you have already mastered and introduces you to possible new ways to maintain your success.

Action for the day: Look up something new about WLS or research a question you have yet to answer.

Topic: RE: What hunger feels like
I've often wondered what it is to feel hunger.  It seems like anytime i was hungry, it wasn't real hunger, but emotional hunger.  and that happened so often that I never had a chance to feel real hunger.

Lately, I've been doing the 30 minute thing.  If i'm still hungry in 30 minutes, i can eat.  But in that 30 minute wait time, I have to try other things to distract myself.  Any thing other than eating.  Sometimes, if its later in the evening, i'll just go to bed rather than eat.

Topic: Don't Quit!!
I've kept this poem for a long time. I saw it a couple of years ago and it has given me lots of motivation and inspiration. I talked with a member today that was frustrated with a weight regain and I shared it with her. She loved it so I wanted to share here too:

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill.
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns.
And many a fellow turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man.
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup.
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar.
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit.

And that's worth thinking about.

Topic: What hunger feels like
It sounds simple enough - do I know what hunger feels like.  I have to say that before I had my surgery that I had no clue.  I always ate (or was full from the last time(s) I ate) so true hunger never was part of my day.  I ate over head hunger and misinterpreted that as true hunger but it wasn't.

Fast forward to almost nine years later, with my goal to combat emotional overeating, I really focus on my emotion management and zero in on those times I want to feed the monster of head/heart hunger.

Yesterday was a prime example.  I was in a funky mood.  No specific reason why.  No disagreements, upsets or anything I could put my finger on.  It was just one of those days.  In the past, I would have wanted to change how I feel.  What better way than to eat.  Yes, I have to admit that even after my surgery, there have been times that I have emotionally eaten to change the way I feel.  Yesterday would have been one of those times.  However, yesterday I didn't!!!   My funk really lasted all day until I went to bed.  Couldn't shake it and actually didn't try all that much.  I went through my normal work and the rest of my day but it stayed.

As I woke up this morning, the exhilaration I felt was amazing.  Despite feeling pretty funky for no reason, I stayed with it, knowing it wouldn't last forever.  I believed it was just one of those days and believed tomorrow (today) was a new day.  Sure enough, it is!!  Food is such an easy way to deal with funk but I chose ME instead!  As I sit here today sharing this with you, I choose me in the future. I broke that connection even more of using food to eliminate funk.   I'll use this experience in the future and choose ME.

All the best!!

Topic: Two great books!
Upon the recommendation of an OH member/friend, I bought two books that I'm excited to read:

50 Ways to Soothe Yourself Without Food by Susan Albers, Psy.D.
and
Eating The Moment by Pavel G. Somov, Ph.D.

I'm looking forward to checking them out!! If anyone else has read books they find helpful, please let me know. I've read so many awesome books that members have read and shared.

Thanks, Cathy
