Cathy, I fully believe that God graces with us with special friends to help us and guide us and teach us. I am so blessed to have you as one of those friends. When you say "friendships are a gift" truer words have never been spoken.

Topic: The Circle of Friendships - Give and Take
I love my friendships. I enjoy friendships with people in my life that are my friends, co-workers, leaders, members and my clients. Friendships are such an important component of our lives. Healthy friendships are such a gift in our lives.

I'm feeling very grateful today for the give and take of friendships. I have a few very close inner circle of friends that add more than I can ever say to my life. A couple of them have been the lifelines that contestants use in the "Millionaire" game show. When contestants are stuck, they call their lifeline for assistance. With these special friends, I do the same thing. When I'm stuck, frustrated, need to vent, and just have a sounding board that I can trust, they are my lifelines.

I have a friend that is also a post-op that I met from leading my support group. She understands and "gets me" and loves me anyway.

This weekend, a neighbor is going through a difficult time in her life. She has kids that are around my sons' ages. I took care of her boys this weekend - four boys! Even through the chaos, noise, being a referee, chef, etc., it made me so happy to be able to help and support my neighbor.

Friendships are a gift that are a circle of giving/taking and are one of the lifelines in our lives.

Topic: Food Addiction course update
As many of you know, I'm taking a addiction recovery coach training class that includes food issues. It has been fascinating to put our dependence on food in a different way than I've ever known before.

Rather than push away and feel bad about myself for my issues with food, I now understand and feel tremendous compassion for the reasons why I turned to food. Instead of feeling as though I'm defective or broken for my food issues, I now believe I'm very determined and resourceful as to my past with food.

In our past when we initially turned to food for whatever reason personal to each of us, it worked. However, addiction starts when that coping strategy of turning to food no longer is needed and doesn't work for us in the same way. Obviously, if we've become morbidly obese, it no longer works for us in the same way that it was necessary for our survival when we initially turned to food. When once using food for whatever reason worked, it has worn out its use and, in fact, we don't need it now.

The awareness of my past reasons why I turned to food as a child and my life now, is huge. I understand the reasons why I needed food to cope and why I DON'T need it now.

I'll continue to update here with this powerful way of thinking of our food issues along with the understanding and compassion for my past, now and future.

Topic: You are in charge of your choices!
"Being happy is the cornerstone of all that you are!
Nothing is more important than that you feel good!
And you have absolute and utter control about that
because you can choose the thought that makes you worry or the thought that makes you happy; the things that thrill you, or the things that worry you. You have the choice in every moment."
-- Abraham Hicks

I was coaching a client and she is in a situation that is quite troubling for a temporary period of time. She said something that really struck me. She told me that for now, she is making the choice to do a certain thing. In making a choice, she is taking control. It isn't the choice she ultimately wants to make, however, for the interim, it is the choice she has selected for the here and now.

We all have the power of choice. We choose who we keep as people in our lives, our friends, our surgery procedure and ultimate our habits and lifestyle in exercise and food choices.

For a long time, I felt victimized by my morbid obesity. I was at the mercy of situations that caused me to eat. Therefore, I felt like a victim and ate like a victim. Now, I am not a victim and I choose not to eat like a victim any longer.

The power of choice is amazing. Take responsibility and own your choices every day. You are in control when you own your choices.

Topic: What are YOU proud of?
As all of you know, I enjoy watching the "Biggest Loser" show. I respect and appreciate the dedication and commitment the contestants show in changing their lives. Granted, it is in a controlled environment and not in their real lives, however, I love watching them triumph and overcome their physical and emotional challenges they face.

I also love the theme lead-in song of "Proud" by Heather Small. I have practically worn out the entire CD by Heather Small because it is full of inspirational and motivating sings. I share the lyrics with you as I believe it reflects questions and statements we all can apply to ourselves. When I pick up my children from school, I ask them what they have done that day they are proud of. What have you done today that YOU are proud of?

PROUD by Heather Small (Theme Song to Biggest Loser)

I look into the window of my mind
Reflections of the fears I know I've left behind
I step out of the ordinary
I can feel my soul ascending
I am on my way
Can't stop me now
And you can do the same

What have you done today to make you feel proud?
It's never too late to try
What have you done today to make you feel proud?
You could be so many people
If you make that break for freedom
What have you done today to make you feel proud?

Still so many answers I don't know
Realize that to question is how we grow
So I step out of the ordinary
I can feel my soul ascending
I am on my way
Can't stop me now
And you can do the same

What have you done today to make you feel proud?
It's never too late to try
What have you done today to make you feel proud?
You could be so many people
If you make that break for freedom
What have you done today to make you feel proud?

We need a change
Do it today
I can feel my spirit rising
We need a change
So do it today
'Cause I can see a clear horizon

What have you done today to make you feel proud?
So what have you done today to make you feel proud?
'Cause you could be so many people
If you make that break for freedom
So what have you done today to make you feel proud?
What have you done today to make you feel proud?
What have you done today
You could be so many people?
Just make that break for freedom
So what have you done today to make you feel proud?

Topic: The Biggest Loser as a way for motivation!
As many of you, I love the Biggest Loser television show. I have a couple of friends that give me grief for being a fan.

The reason that I love it so much is watching people struggle with morbid obesity and changing their lives. The transformations the contestants go through are similar to the transformations we experience as a result of our surgery. True, it is in a different form and in front of millions of viewers but they change their lives, just as we do from our surgery.

This weekend, I was needing an extra jolt of motivation. I tape episodes of Biggest Loser for "those" days. I took note of why I was feeling low. It was due to my pitty party of my herniated disc situation and not knowing what to do yet wanting to do something. It is hard to be so limited in your life when you've come to embrace a lifestyle that includes doing things with your family without pain.

I watched a few episodes this weekend and they put me back into the mindset of health. I can remember those days of being morbidly obese and food controlling my life, just as they have when they begin. As the series continues, you see the changes that happen and how they regain their lives.

I know it is a controversial format for many people. What I love about the Biggest Loser is the people that are morbidly obese and want to change their lives....and do it! It is a reminder of what I've accomplished and what goes on every single day in the lives of all of us as wls patients.

Topic: Food: What was the purpose for you?
Whether we are considering weight loss surgery, pre-op or post-op, we tend to think of our issues with food as negative and wish they'd never started in our lives.

What about this.....At some point in your life, usually as a child, we turned to food for a reason. It served a purpose in our lives. Food helped us in some reason to cope or survive a situation that we didn't have the skills or cognitive ability to deal with ourselves.

For me, food definitely served a purpose. As difficult as it is to admit here with whomever is reading this, to some degree I was the black sheep of my family. I've always been more insightful and had a need to know and understand my cir****tances and also myself. I had a toxic family environment and for a child that has a need to understand, blowing the appearance of the perfect family doesn't work. On the outside, the appearance was that everything was just perfect. Inside the family, it was far from it. When the two didn't quite gel, I asked questions to understand. Not only wasn't is appreciated as to my curiousity and desire to understand, it was rejected as was I.

It was as though I was a square peg that was pounded to fit into a smaller circle. It didn't work at all and the pounding on me to fit into that small circle of my family caused me to turn to food. I turned to food to turn off my confusion, rejection, need for love and acceptance for who I was-different from them. I also turned to food to squelch who I really was in an attempt to fit in and be like they were. At the time, squelching who I was and surviving my toxic surroundings, worked for me. It helpd me get through.

As an adult, I never ditched that mode of using food to live my life. Hey, it worked for me earlier in my life, I knew nothing else. As we all know, problem is that turning to food like I did to survive as a child no longer worked and was truly no longer necessary. The problem was made worse because it resulted in becoming morbidly obese. Food no longer worked the way it used to as a little girl and was not necessary. I was free and living on my own as an adult but I still was squelched by the hold food had on my life.

After having surgery and working with my own coach, I've come to realize all of this. I've developed other ways to cope with life and my emotions rather than squelch myself with food. I've also come to appreciate and understand the purpose food has played in my life as a little girl and also that I no longer need food as it doesn't serve the purpose it did. I've created my own way and in the process truly learned to love and appreciate those qualities that were hated and rejected as a child.

I think we were very brilliant to turn to food when our surroundings were unbearable to us so we could cope and live. Now, we are still equally brilliant and see that we no longer need to use food and that it no longer serves a purpose for us now as adults.

Change your relationship with food from your past and you will change your life now and your future.

Topic: Dreams that you think will never happen and do!
I am constantly amazed at the power we have to fulfill our dreams that are most important to us. It is interesting to see how your life can change so quickly.

We must become aware of our dreams. Never did I think I would write and teach an OH Bariatric Coaching Workshop and then become an instructor at Bariatric University. I know for me, sometimes I don't want to acknowledge dreams because they seem too far out. I want to protect myself from the disappointment of dreams that feel impossible.

In addition to teaching the ObesityHelp Basic Bariatric Coaching Workshop, in alliance with Bariatric University, I am an instructor at Bariatric University's Bariatric Coach Training course. I would never thought that would happen. When I reflect back on things in my life, I can see how cir****tances linked together to result in some way such as an instructor at BU or my position with OH.

You never know what is going on today will serve a purpose for you in the future. For me, I can see how that happens a lot in my life.

One of the BU classes starts next Tuesday that I will join as an observer and the class I'll co-instruct is on Monday, Oct. 20th. I'm so excited and still unbelieveable to me.

Dream on because we never know when those dreams will be our reality in our lives!
