Topic: RE: 21 Day Challenge of Change - Day 10
I've come up with a plan that works for me and I'm amazed that I find it simple to stick to. I've posted the "schedule" on my fridge at home and at David's house - everyone knows what I'm doing and when. Here's what it looks like:

Monday:   Walk 30 minutes at lunch - Wii Fit 30 minutes at home (8 p.m.)
Tuesday: Gym after work (5:30 - 7 p.m.)
Wednesday : Walk 30 minutes at lunch - Wii Fit at home (8 p.m.)
Thursday :  Gym after work (5:30 - 7 p.m.)
Friday : Walk 30 minutes at lunch
Saturday: Gym (8 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.)
Sunday: Fun Day

Fun Day can be just about anything - kickball with the kids, tennis witha friend, an extra long walk in the park with my Mom, a bike ride, kayaking etc. It just has to be something FUN!!!

Hope this inspires somebody - I never would have imagined that I would "EXERCISE" let alone look forward to it. I love to get in more trips to the gym but it doesn't always work out. At least this way everyone knows that I have it planned. Life sometimes gets in the way and I'm fairly flexible about changing times or trading out an activity but fo rthe most part this is what I've been doing on a regular basis for over a month now.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

 Hi Roxxi,

Sorry to hear about your struggles.  It is very discouraging when you feel like you're doing everything right and the scale is still creeping in the wrong direction.

Are you keeping a food diary?  Sometimes we don't realize how many calories we are taking in, especially how many calories we are DRINKING.  When I resolved to keep track of every calorie that went into my mouth, I was shocked to discover that I was actually drinking 800 calories a day.  There's a pound & a half a week, right there.

Exercise is unavoidable, as you already know.  Not only does it burn calories, it builds muscle which burns more calories and keeps your metabolism from slowing down.  The key is to make it something that you actually enjoy, not something you dread.  Try not to do the same thing all the time.  Rollerblading, bicycling, martial arts classes, even bellydancing is a viable form of exercising.  Look for a group to join!  You are more likely to stick with it if you are accountable to someone besides yourself.

Also, it helps to know that you are not struggling alone.  Is there a local WLS support group that you can contact?  If not, then definitely use your online buddies for everything we can do for you.

I hope it gets easier for you.  I am cheering for you!

Hi everyone, my name is Natalie.

I was banded (Realize) in June 2008 and received my first fill in July. (3cc's). I began vomiting shortly afterward, but I thought it was my fault for overeating/under-chewing, etc.  I focused on trying to modify my eating habits, but the only way I could eat anything without puking was to stick with liquids.  By September, my band had slipped and I was fully obstructed. This required a 2nd surgery to reposition & re-secure the band. I had my first fill (3 cc's again) in November and began vomiting again in February. RAN to my surgeon to get deflated but it was too late... my band slipped AGAIN. I had to undergo surgery for a third time.  I did not lose a single pound in the last 6 months with the band, despite all the vomiting. The port never stopped hurting since it was originally implanted. I've felt like I had a knife sticking out of my gut for 7 months now. I couldn't even wear jeans or anything with a firm waistband, because it put pressure on the port and it dug into my muscle wall.  I am very active & love to exercise hard, but the port has severely reduced what I was able to do without pain.  For a weight-loss procedure to actually REDUCE your ability to exercise is unacceptable.  For a band to slip TWICE in only 7 months is unacceptable.  I don't think I could ever recommend the band to anyone.  I regret my decision and hope that I make a better one this time around.   Last week, I had the band removed and converted to a sleeve.  I've lost 13 pounds in 10 days.  Yesterday I ate an egg,  ONE egg, and was pleasantly full and remained so for 3 hours without pain or vomiting.  What a novel concept!
Looking forward to a long and beautiful relationship with my sleeve.  Also looking forward to getting lots of positive & helpful advice from my WLS peers.

Topic: 21 Day Challenge of Change - Day 9

Well here we are at day 9. Sorry for the lag in getting the days one after the other . I have been dealing with some health issues and have not been able to post as I want .

So how are we doing ?
Anyone have anything they want to share as far a their daily challenges ?
Are you making strides to reach your goal ?

I want you to know that I am here to help you . You can reach out here . There are many here among us that are long term post opers .. that can and will share with you .

Let's make today a day of sharing . Share with someone your story . If you can share it with someone that could benefit from WlS .. the better .
My entire life after WLS was to give back . I get more satisfaction in helping others than any job or career I have ever had . I feel so good when I see people being successful .

My goal for today is to reach out to someone here on OH that is either newly post op , or waiting for surgery . I am going to welcome them and congratulate them .. and let them know they can count on me .

Make today also the day that you give yourself credit for all that you have overcome . One thing we tend not to do is give our selves credit and pat our selves on the back when we do hit our goals. You must be your biggest cheerleader.

If you decide to do any of these , please come back and post to let  us know how you did .

Love and hugs to all ,

Tink

Being on top of your game , mean knowing all you can about the food you put into your body .
How many of you know what a calorie is ?
Definition: A calorie is a measure of energy expenditure. The calories referred to in diet and exercise are kilocalories (kcal) - 1000 of the calories referred to in science labs for measuring chemical reactions.

A pound of fat stores 3500 calories (kcal). To lose a pound of fat a week a person must eat approximately 500 fewer calories (kcal) per day than he/she expends.

The range of daily calorie burning is from 1600 for a sedentary woman or older people to 2800 for active men, very active women and teenage boys.

Walking expends approximately 100 calories per mile for a 150 pound person.

Pronunciation: cal er ee Common Misspellings: calourie Examples: I will walk for 3.5 miles to burn off the calories in that Snickers bar.

Did your surgeon office give you a certain food proticol to follow ? Such as how many calories you need a day, fats and carbs . How much water you need to drink ? How much protein you will need?
The challenge for you today is to get to know your food . Look at labels .
Set the limits you feel will give you the best weight loss return .
If you do not know these, I ask you go to your surgeon and get them . Make sure he knows that you are getting this info again so you can get back to basics and change your behaviors .

If you cannot get this info from him , my suggestion is to contact a Bariatric Nutritionist .

Know what you put into your body .
Track your food and activity .

My teenage sons have been incredible on this journey. They still have lots of questions about everything that goes on. They may not love all the sugar free foods (popsicles, pudding etc) but they tolerate them and they don't ask for the high sugar counterparts.

The girls at work are a wonderful support system for me. I spend more time at work than I do at home so it's a good thing that they hold me accountable. 2 of the 5 are doing some derivative of the South Beach diet so it makes it WLS friendly around the office. Plus my boss had bypass surgery years and years ago so she is incredibly tight on me. (Not sure if that's good or not?)

David is skinny as a rail and so are his kids. I can see where good eating habits are sorely needed though. Contrary to popular belief in his house - candy is not a food group. I've started keeping a huge veggie tray made up in the fridge and it's made a big hit with him and the kids. They also look forward to hanging out in the kitchen with me while I cook. Apparently David did a lot of Microwaving and we all know how "Healthy" that is.

I think the time spent together in the kitchen is key. My boys and I love to cook together and now David and his kids. It not only creates a great family event (laughing at the flops and ohhing and ahhing at the successes) but it opens some very valuable lines of communications that hopefully will continue to grow stronger with each meal.

** Edited to add** ......Just came across this article on MSN nutrition. Pretty good tie in to today's topic. Hope it comes through for you.    http://health.msn.com/nutrition/articlepage.aspx?cp-document id=100235471

Staying on Track When Everyone Around You is Not .

Many times our families do not require to eat the way we do . This in itself can sabotage our good works .
This may sound silly but I think of it like something parents tell their children. "If your friends all jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?" Unhealthy eating habits are just a slower more painful version of that. So when everyone around you is eating out of control and probably trying to get you to join them, just tell yourself you aren't gonna jump with them.

Making your voice heard at the dinner table and abroad . Make sure you family and friends understand how important it is that you stay on track. Keep foods that are healthy around you . Who knows maybe the family can start eating healthy too .

Has your family been supportive ? Do they work with you to prepare your meals. I know for me my children always helped me to watch my sugar counts .. and to remind me about protein first .

What do you do to include you family or friends ?
Can you share some tips on how we one can introduce good eating habits to our family ?

I hope that you all are having a great Monday .
I would love to hear how you all are doing on your journeys !

Love ,
Tink

Topic: Stupid, Stupid Stall
I'm spending my 21 day challenge in a freaking  stall. Started at 211.6. Last Monday was 210.6 (Yeah) this morning 211.6 This is 5 weeks that I have played with the same freaking pound. On a positive note - I'm still tracking everything that passes my lips (Food & Beverage). I can see one dreaded pattern - CARBS. Probably not enough calories but definetly to many carbs on a daily basis. The exercise routine is becoming fairly set in stone and I feel fantastic.

Last week was my birthday and I'm proud to say that for the first time in my entire life I'll be taking clothes back because they're a size too big. I cannot believe that my size 16's were too big. OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another incredible WOW moment happened this weekend as well. David and I took the kids riding on the beach in the 4x4 area. It got kinda cool while we were out and silly me hadn't brought along a sweatshirt or coat (did for everybody else) but not for Moi. So Dadiv found an extra sweatshirt and told me to put it on. "Yeah right - like your sweatshirt is going to fit me." (He's tall and skinny) IT FIT - Comfortably too I might add.

I absolutely love my RNY!!!!!!!!!!!

Topic: This Week's Vitamin Sales
Since vitamins are so important to us, as I was going thru the ads today, I thought I'd post who has what on sale. I did this last week and everyone seemed to appreciate it, so here we go......

***Please note, I am not advocating any brand or what you should take, as always if you have any questions, check with your doctor first***

CVS:
Nature's Bounty - buy 1 get 1 free.
CVS's own brand, all Calcium Supplements - Buy 1 get 1 free. This includes calcium citrate which is what we use. This is a good buy, they don't run this sale very often so now is the time to stock up.
Not a vitamin, Gold Emblem Candy .88 cents.
They have a good selection of sugar free items and I am hooked on their sugar free root beer barrels.
Nice thing about CVS is that their rainchecks have no limit and no expiration date. See my "beef" about Rite Aid below.

RITE AID:
Centrum vitamins
, all types $9.99(uh, did'nt they have these on sale for $6.99 week before last?plus there was a $1 off coupon in the paper)
Rite Aid, their own brand all vitamins and supplements - buy 1, get 1 free.
They are also offering this week a $25 gift card for any new or transferred perscription. I've been "bouncing" perscriptions all over depending on who is offering this. Hey it pays for the vitamins!
Ok here is my complaint about Rite Aid. Last week they had Pure Protein Bars on sale for $1 each. These are the only brand that I use and I like to stock up. When I got to the store they only had 8 or 9 in only 1 flavor and no more. I asked for a raincheck and was told it was only good for 2 bars! and the raincheck was good for only 30 days. Last month, CVS had these on sale for the same price and I got a raincheck with NO LIMIT AND NO EXPIRATION DATE!

WALGREENS:
Finast Natural,
vitamins and supplements - buy 1 get 1 free.
Centrum Vitamins, $9.99
Walgreens Gold Seal, Single Letter vitamins - buy 1 get 1 free.
Not a vitamin, Jell-O sugar free 2/$1 with coupon from their ad. Limit 4.

Ok, that's it for this week. I hope this helped, and when buying in any kind of quanity, be sure to check the expiration dates
