Hi Sara,
I was scared and did worry that I might die. I wrote my husband and sons notes in case I did die.
I think fear of dying  is a normal response. It is a serious surgery. I'm very glad I did the surgery. I had a G.I. bleed after the surgery that required re-hospitalization for a couple of days. Even with that I'd do it again. I had RNY on 12-21-09 . I've lost 75 pounds, 30 inches and feel good. I'm able to exercise, walk without pain and even cross my legs. The surgery is a huge power tool that helps boost the eating changes that are necessary for lifelong success.
With a 7 year old child I would think you'd need some help. How long depends on the type of surgery. Is yours being done  laparoscopic  or open? You can't drive while on pain meds. I did not need pain meds once I got home. I felt weak & dizzy for awhile. My husband & sons were helpful esp for the first week or so. My type 2 diabetes is gone, my arthritis is better, I'm off cholesterol meds.  It is a hard decision. I felt regret til week 9-10 after the surgery. I kept thinking "what have I done to myself?" You go through lots of emotional changes, excitement to fear to you name it.
For me just talking about it helped. Let us know how you are.
I look forward to getting to know you.
Hugs~

Topic: QUOTE OF THE DAY
Motivational Quote - When you stand still, you reject the struggle, and you refuse to change and grow. Ultimately, you reject fulfillment, happiness, the dance for joy and everything else that is eternally good.
SparkPeople Translation

Action is the only way anything ever gets done. Sitting around and waiting for life to happen to you will only guarantee one thing: that you’re not going to end up with a life you love. By waiting, you can react to what’s tossed your way and nothing more. It’s easy to take a passive approach to life without taking chances. It’s easy to fall into a rut and do the same things the same way all the time. Change is what’s hard, but it’s change that will reveal all the wonders that life has to offer. You can break out of your set ways by taking action. Try doing the same thing a different way. Jump in with both feet and learn something new. Ask a friend to teach you a skill they’re good at. Grow as a person and your world grows with you.

it went over many of the risks and information about surgery. granted it was 3 am and made me teary eyed, but i feel so prepared now and realize how important it is to have my husband attend my sugeron appointments. does anyone know how long you need help or someone to be with you after surgery? the psychologist said my daughter would need more care than i would probably (shes going to be 7). Lots on my mind after watching this. i dont like medical procedures and was in denial about how serious the surgery is. what a wake up call... do i still want it... yes... am i afraid to die? yes... but i am not going to live very long w/o the surgery: diabetes, high cholestoral, sleep apnea, thyroid problems, PCOS, depression, and i hope thats it but sometimes i forget.

Topic: RE: Your Biggest Struggle ..,
i havent had surgery yet but im in the approval process of supervised dieting. getting the fluids in is really hard, but for me giving up the pop and chips is where i am struggling. luckilly shes taking me one step at a time and trying to get rid of the pop first, then next month chips. i know i want this and need to change but its the hardest thing ive ever had to do, and i know the journey just gets harder.

My biggest struggle is evening desire to eat. (old habit)
I'm trying to stay busy in the evening. If I give in I limit the damage by measuring out what I eat, eat it on a plate and choose something healthy ie. baby carrots, green/red peppers, sugar free popcicles. I would guess that this is a long lasting monster that will rear it's ugly head from time to time.

Way to go McButler!
Using a pedometer gives me such motivation to walk as much as possible. I aim for 10,000 steps per day. I don't alway's make it but it is a good way to measure.
I hope someday to "like" exercise. It is not something I've ever liked.
Have a great walking day~

Hi and welcome to Life-Starts. I'm so sorry about your broken leg. What a difficult time.
Congratulations on getting the surgery done.  You will feel better as each week goes by. I felt a new normal by about week 9-10.
I had RNY on 12-21-09,  I've lost 75 pounds and feel really good. I'm doing water aerobics and walking for exercise.
For me this surgery has been amazing. It has been hard at times but worthwhile.

Once I made the decision to have surgery, it was still a long time in coming.  It  only took me about 10 years to be convinced to have surgery to  begin with.   I think the only day I was not overweight was the day I was born.  Several years ago, a close friend had the bypass and the dr. really botched it up and she almost died.  To this day, she still has a lot of problems with it. Since than I would not even discuss the possibility.  That is until my dr said it was that or have a stroke.  I opted for surgery.  I was set to have the sleeve on March 30th but life intervened.  On Feb 27th, I fell and broke my leg in 5 places.  So, no surgery until leg healed enough to walk, etc.  I spent 3 weeks in the hospital and when I was released I had to use a wheelchair and a walker to hop as I could not have any weight on that leg.  I have been having therapy since that time and now do not use any aids to walk.  I had the sleeve done on 5/25 and waiting for all the great results.
