I am about 3 months out now.... and eating is becoming easier... I am balancing my meals,   making my lunch etc etc

But I still continually fall short on my protein levels..

I journal everything I eat and drink in my fitness pal....

I need some ideas.. other than greek yogurt.... blech....

example for lunch tomorrow:

1 tbsp green beens
1 sausage
1 teaspoon sauted mushrooms

breakfast:  the hardest meal of day for me.. time is always an issue.... I usuall have a large glass of low fat milk  (also don't feel like eating) or a glass of v8

when I find I make smoothies... I never finish them...  it takes me until lunch time to finish them.. and I am full...and cannot get lunch in....

Dinner:

usually some sort of protein chicken or beef or hamburger based
veggie

ok.. maybe I am just whining and i have to suck it up... and get the dam protein in right....

ok... thanks for listening....

I drink a Carnation Instant Breakfast sugar free every morning and evening with a scoop of  unflavored protein in it. That is 34grams per shake. The Carnation alone is about 15 grams with skim milk. Good luck!

I've managed to get mine in everyday by making a 60 gram of protein drink every night.

Hi there,

I was going to say....are we three months out?!?!!  It is damn tough and I am thankful to be home and able to prepare my meals.

I typically have a protein shake for breakfast if I am rushing around or scramble an egg with low fat chicken (Schneiders is really good) and a bit of tomato or low fat cheese (1 tbs)  Kashi Go Lean is a good cereal alternative

Chili has been amazing for me, as has the lasagna recipe you know about.  I find when I have V8, it is not a meal. rather, just part of my daily fluid intake.  ( I made a RNY friendly chicken pot pie last night that was quite good as well - but my husband said it tasted like curry - WTF.)

I found making smoothies were hard to get down and felt heavy.  A blender bottle and a really good shake (ISO Whey Orange Cream or Chocolate with decaf coffee or mint extract are top choices, made with 1% milk) That is 40G protein for 1 cup right off the bat.  I like this because it takes pressure off for the rest of the day and I can eat a good combination of foods.

Oh, for work, tuna salad lettuce wraps are tasty (tuna salad pumped up with spices - I put chopped pecans in if I have a relatively low fat menu planned for the day - boston lettuce or really nice romaine or hmmmm...not sure what it is called but it is bushy on the top...errrr....green. Wrap the tuna salad - 4tbs. in 2 pieces and it is quite satisfying)

Hope this helps whiny...I mean Meridon..

I agree with the sugar free carnation instant breakfast recommendation, it is a great way to get in 15 grms of protein without having to deal with protein powder, plus you can add warm milk and make it a hot chocolate which can be a challenge with some protein powders as they can clump up....

I eat low fat cheese, a Greek yogurt, or grab some nuts in between  my "meals" to boost up my protein over the day...

I have a question for those of you having the high protein count drinks.  My dietician told me that when you ingest a shake or protein drink, your body can only absorb about 24-25 grams of protein at a time.  Just like we can only absorb about 400-500mg of a calcium citrate supplement at a time so it would be pointless to swallow a 800-1000mg tab....

Any thoughts on this?  Thanks!

the shakes seem to be a necessity, i would fall short too without them, and i eat almost all protien and nothing else. i say at least 2/3 meal should be a protein source. 1 ounce of chicken has 7 grams so if you can eat 2 ounces per meal maybe.

also i do not mix a full shake.  i drink 4 ounces milk with half the scoop in the morning and another in the evening.  this gives me 17 grams at a time and 35 for the day.  easier to drink that small of an amount and helps me get my goal.

have you tried unflavored protein powder? add to about anything,  also there are protien "waters" kellogs has one.

finally if the shakes are tough i sometimes have a low sugar protein bar instead, it is the same calories and gives you 20-30 grams of protein, maybe you could tolerate those better?

hang in there!!!  you could get a vanilla powder and add half a scoop to your milkl in the morning, when i did this in the past, io barely tasted it, that would give you a 18 gram boost!
 whine all you want~!  lol
