Hello!

Just curious about everyones choices about a medic alert bracelet.  I didn't even know they were needed but apparently after wls it is strongly recommended.  So my question is, what info needs to be on it and where have you found yours at?

Thanks for this post!  I needed the reminder  to get one.

I would probably put on my bracelet my surgery type and date  "RNY Gastric Bypass 9/2011" and list my medication/food allergies if they fit.  Make sure if you have bypass to list NSAIDs as an allergy-you cannot take them after surgery ever again b/c of the high risk of ulcers.

If you have any  long term medical problems, I would include them.  Things like bleeding disorders, seizure disorders, if you take blood thinners, if you have had a transplant, any implantable medical devices, etc.

I think I am going to order mine from this site: http://www.laurenshope.com/ they have so cute and feminine designs.

Hope this helps!

I use www.medicalert.org - this is a 24 hour ER service company if you have there medical alert. If you have any questions call the non ER number (the main line).   I do have Type II diabetes and other conditions but noted in my information I update in case the EMT's, Police have to call.

The first year cost $39.95 some time that doesnt include the bracelet. I know this seems very high for a membership. I can update the information as many times as I change medication, Dr's. This asks what surgeries you have had.

The number you have stays with you, you just call or fill out the forms on line. You get your bracelet  or whatever you choose within a week.

I like this company because they give you a decal for your car and a card you can have hide away when driving.

You need to put on there DO NOT INTEBATE, No NSAIDS...Also if you have other medical conditions including diabetes, heart problems, etc....at least this is what my Bariatric Coordinator said...if you are out and cannot tell them you have RNY they need to know not to put a tube down your throat - they can shove it down and rip your pouch (it is so small) - She has worked in the ER and has seen it happen.  They also need to know not to give you any pain killers NSAIDS as well...

That reminds me I need to order mine...Thanks for the reminder Sabrina :-)

I cannot imagine putting "do not intubate" on my bracelet b/c it sounds like "do not resuscitate".

If your surgery type is on your bracelet, then they should know to be careful during intubation...?

its not "do not intubate" its not to do it blind I think. From what i am understanding that for people that don't have ther RNY it goes deeper and if they go that deep for us it can puncture our pouches.

I agree Kady, I would see that do not intubate means do not resuscitate.  I def want to be resuscitated so that I can see the new me LOL
