My incisions were covered in a skin type glue. So I did not need any dressings. But I have seen where people said that their incisions leaked and they had to have dressings. So, I suppose it is better to be prepared then not. I would get the gauze that are larger, you can always cut them down to fit and tape. As for any type of ointment, that would probably need to wait to ask Surgeon after surgery if you have any issues that will need the gauze. just my input.

My incisions had steri strips on them-- and I didn't have to do anything with them.  Just let them fall off (after about 1-2 weeks).  You can shower with them and everything.. the ends started curling, so I just trimmed them as they went.

I did have a drainage tube that they removed before I left the hospital.  When one of the interns pulled it out it left a very ugly hole under my breast about the size of a large pen.  He put a simple piece of gauze on and told me to remove it after a day or two (no water on that one, I just covered it when I showered those first days.  When I took it off, it was still a hole, but they said to just leave it alone- wash with mild soap daily and it would fill itself in.  It did-- but it took several weeks!  No bandaids-- no gauze-- no ointment -- for me anyway!

Just make sure you have a comfy bra (if you plan to wear one)... I didn't want to put one on for about the first two weeks!  I did have to a couple times though, for company and luckily I had a front clip soft cotton one that worked well.

hey!
I have not felt hungry since surgery at this time, I have to remember to drink my meals. I sleep all the time, perhaps I am stealing your sleep LOL. Have you spoken to your surgeon and see if you can take something to help you sleep? I know that sleep helps with the healing.

I am so jealous of your 25 lbs, I am only down 16 down.

Glad to hear that things went well for you, Shannon! Hopefully those extra fluids pounds will drop off soon, as well as all the rest of them. Best wishes for a continued good recovery!

(PS If my surgeon doesn't give me narcotics I'm going to grab his lower lip and pull it up over his head!)

Topic: Question for those already post-op

Since I'm going to have to stay in a hotel for at least a couple of days after I'm discharged, I am wondering what to pack for dressing changes for the incisions.  Did you use bandaids (if so, small or large), or gauze and tape (if so, what size gauze)?.  Did they want you to put any ointment on the incisions or leave them dry?  Is there anything else I need to know about wound care before I get home?

To those who have just joined and anyone else who does not yet have their date on our chart of surgeries, please post a reply to this thread if you would like your date added.

While I will be gone all next week (drive to Jacksonville on Monday; surgery Tuesday; probably discharged Thursday, stay in a local hotel a few days. . . ), I am taking my computer to the hotel.  Once I get back to the hotel, I hope to check in and see how everyone else is doing.

Welcome home!  You'll be on the losing side in no time.  Besides the IV fluids you retain post op, people always retain fluids when they fly too.  As soon as you pee it all out, you'll be on the downward path!

Where in Florida do you live?  I may have asked you before, but I have memory issues due to my Sjogren's.  (They call it Sjogren's Fog; some days the fog is thicker than others.)  I live in Sarasota, about an hour south of Tampa.  I'm having my surgery 4 hours away at Mayo in Jacksonville.

How long did you have to stay in the hotel after you were discharged?  I have to stay a while too, but the nurse was a little more on the shorter side than the surgeon.  I'm sure he just wants to cover himself, but I have no desire to stay in a hotel from Thursday until Monday if I'm doing well.  I much prefer the nurse's suggestion:  stay in the hotel until Saturday morning, and if you are doing well - go home.

Hey there! The first week was super fast but this week has been dragging.  I have been Iced in since last Friday and today was the first time I could even go outside so I am very stir crazy.  Has anyone felt hungry after surgery?  I have had a couple of times where I did but wonder if it is all in my head. I am getting all my protein and liquids in so far and "eating" my soups and yogurts as well as the other liquid items. The worst thing for me right now is insomnia.  I sleep in 2-3 hour increments and that is all I can do. That doesn't help the wanting to eat thing since there no consistency in my sleep pattern.  Is anyone else experiencing this? I also still have one incision leaking a little but the others are almost healed. And man do they itch! LOL. Otherwise, I am down 25 and doing fine with very little discomfort.  I hope everyone is doing well.

Topic: UPDATE

I am finally home. I had my surgery on Monday in Tijuana. Everything went great. I agree with most, the wort day is the day after surgery. I only had 3 incisions and he said it was easy because I stuck to my pre op diet. I ate several Popsicles on the 2nd day. I didn't like the ice too much. My surgeon does not use narcotics so all I got was tramadol which was ok. I had 2 bouts of nausea where I though I was going to throw up. Thank God I didnt. A cold washcloth to the forehead and deep breathing was the solution. I showered and took a small walk outside on the 2nd day. I passed the leak test on Wed and was released to o back to the hotel. I layed on my side which was heaven. I will say that when he took my drain out it was horrible. The pain was bad. But thankfully it was over in a few seconds. Now I am home in Florida, I have drank 15 oz of apple juice while on the plane. I feel wonderful. I actually gained a few pounds so I am not on the loosing side yet.
