My doctor specifically told me that jello and Popsicles count.  What I ave done is count the Popsicles at 3 oz each since I believe that is what it says on the package.  For the jello, I count the quantity of water I added to the mix.  If I added 2 cups then the entire bowl  of jello is worth 16 ounces and I divvy it up according to how much I eat at a particular time. Hope this helps.

I am glad you are doing well.  I had my rny on Monday as well.  I came home from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and feel good.  I must have had an easier time of it than some because I am already weaning off my pain meds and I am up and around quite a bit. I even went to the store today with a friend. It was a short trip, but still, I felt good enough to go out.  I got 64 ounces of fluids in today have not had a single bit if trouble other than being a little tired and sore.  So good so for. I hope the trend continues.

I would probably would figure there is about 2 oz of liquid in a Popsicle and jello. I will not state they are much more than that. As for protein that would have to come from looking at the containers.

Now for not wanting to drink anything because you feel like your forcing yourself. I do that everyday. I am 15 days out. I NEVER feel hungry. I do feel thirsty at times and sometimes it is horrid need for water.

I have had to make myself. I started doing this when I read a patient went into the hospital for dehydration. He was so bad his kidneys were shutting down. Now I figure putting myself on a timer to make sure I get my liquids or suffering what he did.. I am going to force myself.

I have a protein shake and a glass of ice water near me at ALL times. I sip, sip sip all day long. I make sure that an hour after I get up, I focus on my protein shake. Then around 2 hours later I have a jello. Perhaps two hours later I have a Popsicle. I am slowly getting onto more solid foods, so there are times I add yogurt and cottage cheese. But all day long, I sip on my water and protein drink.

So if forcing yourself, keeps you out of the hospital from having horrid complications. Then my advice is to follow the Dr and try as hard as you can to get more fluids in.

You may want to ask this over on the regular RNY board, but to my mind, yes they count. I mean, if a popsicle melts, it's liquid, right? Same with jello. As for how much, there should be a notation on the package as to how much each serving is (ounces), I'd use that number.

You may not feel like taking anything in, but you have to. If you don't get enough fluids, you might have to go to the ER to get an IV for hydration. Dehydration is dangerous, so as hard as it may be, you need to make sure you're getting enough fluids. Try something warm, like bouillion or broth, and remember to sip, sip, sip.

Good luck!

Hey.  I have a question.  Do you all count Popsicles and jello as fluids?  If so, how much fluid do you count it for??  My surgeons office called to check on me today to see how I was doing.  They asked how much fluid and protein.  They want me to get in more.  I just don't feel like "eating" or drinking, and feel like I'm forcing myself.

I know you won't see this as your surgery day is today (Yayyyyy!  /kermitflail) but when you get back, I want you to know that I was thinking of you! I'm sure everyone else here is as well. You've been the driving force behind this group, and your work is very much appreciated.

Best wishes, healing thoughts, and all around good vibes heading your way! And after that, it's...

Off to the loser's bench with you!!
