December, 2013 RNY Buddies
Now I've done it. . . .
I bit the bullet and joined LA Fitness. It is literally right down the road from me, so the time getting there won't be an excuse. Except for the fact that my "initial assessment" was a very hard sell for a personal trainer (at the bargain basement cost of $180 a month for one 50 minute session a week; plus a $150 enrollment fee), I think I'm really going to enjoy it. They have one type of bike that will be perfect for my knees; they have a ton of weight machines, and they have a pool (aqua classes and free swim time). They also have a hot tub and sauna.
I'm not just going to lose weight, I'm going to get into shape! It takes a lot to keep up with a 13 month old!!

Good for you! And after you work out, you get to relax all those muscles in a sauna...mmmm! Heavenly!
I hope it works out well for you. I'm still getting into the groove of getting on my treadmill every day, signing up at a gym seems like a huge thing to me. You're a great inspiration, though!

I have a wonderful treadmill here, but I can't use it anymore because of my knees. They have a bike there with the pedals at an angle that takes all pressure off my knees. I also know from the times when I've been thin I have to do weight training - or my body is a mess no matter what my weight. I politely turned down their VERY hard sell yesterday for hiring a personal trainer. It really ticks me off when they do that. I wanted to say, "NO - I do NOT see the value in paying an extra $200 a month for one 50 minute training session per week." Never mind the fact there was an enrollment fee of $150 and it was a one year contract. GRRRRRRRRR
Karen
I know exactly what you mean. Wait until they try to sell you on their nutritional counseling and supplements!!

Thanks so much for your post!! I thought I was the only one who would like to duct tape their lips shut forever!! We belonged to Golds Gym for about 15 years and they are also a hard sell!! Seriously...back the hell off! Right now I belong to Fitness 19, but my husband is going to add me onto his 24 Hour Fitness membership...they have a pool...so looking forward to swimming some laps and also setting in the sauna. Congratulations on the gym though! We deserve it!
Thanks Anne. It's great you can tell you are already making progress. Keep at it and you will have one smoking hot body!
I'm on the slow track on my gym. Because of my autoimmune disease, I have sore muscles and joints all the time - plus chronic fatigue. I went to the gym M - F last week, but came home and took a 2 hour nap. There goes the day! I am determined to stick with it though, and my body will just have to adapt. My favorite is walking laps in the pool for an hour. I feel it in my legs and upper arms afterward, but it's so peaceful and soothing while I'm doing it. It's my reward for the weight machines.
I have yet to try the sauna. Anyone used a sauna while on meds for high BP? I'm thinking it might not be a good idea. . . I guess I can always ask my internest at my next appointment.
