Another great OH Event!!!
November 10, 2010 9:17 pm
What can I say?

It is wonderful that OH sponsors these outstanding events for all of us members to attend if possible.  Having been to a few of them now, I can say that it is very beneficial to everyone involved. The members have a chance to meet other members, bond and formulate new friendships.  Vendors have the opportunity to present their items to the bariatric community which in some cases we as the patients do no have the opportunity to learn about them otherwise.  The professional speakers present incredible topics and we are able to meet with them one on one.

I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with the founder, Eric (something I had wanted to do for a very long time I might add) and chat with him on various topics.  I hope to be able to chat with him in the near future as there were a few great ideas discussed and would love to see them come to fruition.

Once again I met up with Kim, her husband and daughter, Yvonne, Carie, Dr. Garth Davis, Chef Dave (love the new book by the way), Connie Stapleton and many many others.  I was disappointed that due to a scheduling conflict, Bo was unable to attend.  Yvonne did however make it possible for all of us to say "HELLO"!

I cannot say enough about OH and their continued commitment to support and educate all of us...THANK YOU OH!!

Bo McCoy - from OH!
September 17, 2010 1:59 pm

....and the laughter rang out!

We were honored to have at our September 18th support group meeting, Bo McCoy from ObesityHelp.com.  Bo is such a inspirational, motivational speaker.

He provided a mixture of humor, information and "food for thought".  Bo spoke about his WLS journey, his successes and his failures.

ObesityHelp was piloting a support group product sampling program. We were pleased to be the first ObesityHelp group to try the samples.

We were able to have a live taste test at our meeting.  Feedback forms were provided for the members to complete.

I personally wish to thank Bo for being our guest speaker.

Bad News - Good News
April 25, 2009 6:53 am
One thing as a bariatric patient, it is most important to have your blood tests on a regular basis and to keep track of your labs.

Having mine done every three months, I had noticed my AST/ALT levels slowly increasing.  Normally when overweight, they have a tendency to be high pre-surgery and decrease as the weight reduces.  In my case, mine were normal.  However over a 6 month period, they increased 2-3 times the normal range.  For those not familiar, the ASST/ALT are your liver enzymes.

Being a bit alarmed, I questioned my primary physician.  He decided to check for hepatitis, which was negative.  He also ordered a sonogram.  When the results came back they indicated a mass on my right kidney and a mass on my pancreas.

I of course when into PANIC MODE!  It truly took me by surprise for I have been feeling wonderful, on top of the world....and these masses had nothing to do with the  ASt/ALT levels.

The doctor ordered a CT scan the following day.  Needless to say the stress and worry placed me in turmoil.  Waiting for the results seemed liked weeks.

Two days later I went back to my doctor to learn the results.  Having seen him 6 days previously I was shocked to see that I had lost 5 pounds!  It concerned me of the rapid weight loss....however more concerned to know about the masses.

The mass on my on kidney and also on the adrenal gland was benign.  The two masses on my pancreas..also benign.  WHAT GOOD NEWS.  As I sat sobbing, I thanked God for watching over me.

I still have no answers regarding the liver enzymes so this will be an ongoing dilemma, which I will keep on top off.

Remember, always keep track of your labs....your health depends on it!

March Meeting-Special Guest...
March 20, 2009 2:32 am
I was thrilled to have a very special guest speaker at our March support group meeting.

Even though fighting laryngitis, Dr. Courtney Holbrook did not let our group down.  God bless her.

Dr. Courtney Holbrook PhD is the Director of Bariatric Psychology at the Center for Bariatric Surgery (CBS).  The topic was "Our reltationship with food".   Dr. Holbrook took the time to answer many of the group member's questions and after the meeting spoke with several members one on one.

The Center for Bariatric Surgery (CBS) at St. Vincent Charity Hospital is nationally recognized as a Center of Excellence (COE) by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC),
a pioneering organization designated by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) to pursue excellence in the delivery of bariatric surgical care with the highest levels of efficacy, efficiency and safety.

In fulfilling this mission the SRC has:

  • Established guidelines and criteria for assessing bariatric surgical practices.
  • Evaluated and investigated applicants to ensure they meet established standards for recognition as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.
  • Collected, analyzed and disseminated data in compliance with applicable privacy limitations and other applicable laws and regulations.
According to a study released in July 2005 by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the number of U.S. bariatric surgeries more than quadrupled between 1998 and 2003 - from 13,386 to 71,733. Faced with clinical evidence that the most experienced and best-run bariatric surgery programs have by far the lowest rates of complications, the ASBS Centers of Excellence program was created to recognize bariatric surgery centers that perform well and to help surgeons and hospitals continue to improve the quality and safety of care provided.

The Center for Bariatric Surgery received the Center of Excellence designation for the full three-year term. This three-year level is reserved for those applicants who not only meet, but exceed, the requirements for full approval in most or all respects.

Recently, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services determined that Medicare coverage for bariatric surgery procedures is reasonable and necessary only when performed at facilities that are certified as a Bariatric Center of Excellence.
