Topic: RE: Three Triggers
I am working on it.

My compliant triggers are...attention from others, clothes shopping,  ( It seems to me though that I need to find internal motivators.)

I am working on getting back on track (yes I'm a BOTTer) and am trying to use the Beck book to help me.

Some days I repeat my mantra (Hunger does not = an emergency) about 100 times, other days it doesn't even cross my mind.  I've never known anyone to fall over dead because they did not give into a craving, but people fall over dead a lot because they gave in to their cravings and became morbidly obese.  Our problem is about .01% physical and 99.99% mental/emotional.  We also need to remember we are humans, humans aren't perfect, humans make mistakes, and humans can correct their mistakes - not tomorrow, not Monday, not the 1st of the month, but the very next meal.  You can do it (if I can do it, ANYONE can do it)!  I believe in you.

Yes...when I read the part that 'hunger is not an emergency" that resonated with me too. I spend the bulk of my time scheming and planning what to eat when to eat..obessessed. My whole life has been this way and it frigtens me to change.

Topic: Beck's Exercise #1 Motivation

We are to make a list of our motivations to loose weight as well as percieved disadvantages. As I have read the introduction and chapter one, I have become very uncomfortable because it seems that I may be well on my way to opening a pandora's box of old feelings and thoughts. I have been obese all of my life and my fat is an old friend. But I plan to push through this process one moment at a time.

Motivations to loose weight:
Cured blood pressure, cholesterol, and avoiding diabetes that runs in my family
Looking and feeling more attractive
More energy
More able to participate in activities comfortably
Able to travel more and comfortably
More fashionable (and often less expensive) clothes
Better perceptions from others
More attractive to the opposite sex
Comfortably wear heels
Not always having to wear girdles under everything
Feeling 'light' on my feet

Percieved Disadvantages to Loosing Weight
Not knowing 'who' I will be (identity crisis)
Being more attactive to the opposite sex (deep rooted fear of men)
Loss of approval from friends/family members
Feeling deprived
Loose and saggy skin
                                                            What is YOUR list?

Luna - a big stress-reliever at work (or really anywhere) is to accept the fact that regardless of how wise you are, you are not the center of others universe and you cannot make them do what you know/think they should.  All you can do is control your behavior - no one can make anyone else think, feel or do anything - we can only invite and it's up to the other person whether or not they accept the invitations.  Therefore, know that those folks with whom you are angry CANNOT make you angry, they can only invite - and, up to now, you've accepted their invitation.  Consider if you really want those folks in charge of your life?

Trudy, go back to what your triggers (can also be called motivators) were to have the surgery and to be compliant after surgery.  Write them down, read them often, update them for the here-and-now.  That's how you discover your triggers to be compliant.  I wish you well - you can do it - you did it in the past so there's no doubt you can do it in the present.  I believe in you!

Welcome. THe plan is for us to works through the exercises in the book together, discuss, ask questions and encourage one another through the process. Isn't it funny that even with 'healthy' snacks we still struggle with portion control.
