Hi Guys,

I'm at work and struggling today.  I'm new to group, I have the book but haven't finished reading it.  I did however, get to the part where they mention "Reinforcement Cards and/or phrases" that we should read during the day or when having a bad moment.

What are those phrases?  Need them BAD today.  I can already tell that I'm having thought of eating crap that's not on my meal plan.

HELP!

I'd suggest some of your phrases could be   Hunger DOES NOT = Emergency    or  No one ever dropped over dead because they did not give in to a craving      or Compliance is a choice, effort does not change this truth      or  I can do it!

Lisa - those are reinforcements and phrases you generate for yourself.  They are different and person-speciific for each of us.

Topic: RE: Characteristic # 7: You Focus on Issues of Unfairness (Beck p 39)
Sad but true - Life isn't fair.  Think on these - you can come here and vent and be understood and accepted - just as you are, you can walk, you can breathe unassisted, you can think well, you can talk, you can get out of bed, you can control your movements, you can drive, you can chose what you want to do (as opposed to being in prison where you have very few choices) - so there are a great array of things we can do that, if we will only stop and think, are much more precious than being able to pig out and not gain.  (And, truth be known, very very very few thin people can even hold a candle to our food consumption when we dedicate ourselves to pigging out!!!!!! - and they don't do it for days and days and days like we have been known to do in the past)

Sure, some days I get angry at the food gods because they seem to have it out for me - I'm a human being.  But, it's all between our ears - THINK - if we will only stop and think of the things we can do instead of the things we can't do we will be so much happier.  Do I do it everytime - get real!!!! - of course not, but every time I do stop and think it makes it that much more likely I will do it the next time I need to.

That's what BDS is all about - making new, healthy habits.

Topic: RE: Day 3 Assignment : Eat EVERYTHING Sitting Down
OK - I confess - I only do this about 1/2 the time.  When I'm at home, I don't always sit down - I'm getting better at this, but I don't ALWAYS do it.

For me, following this suggestion is a very very low priority as it has never been paired with unhealthy eating and I've been doing it for years.

It is so important to know what works and what doesn't work for you and these suggestions are vitally important on days when we struggle.  If we concentrate on sitting when we eat and that's not a common behavior for us - then, we are signalling our emotions/thoughts that we are serious about this business of compliance and that is what allows us to control food rather that allowing food to control us.

Please, don't let me lead anyone astray because I don't always sit!

As Jiminy Cricket sings in the movie, Pinocio, ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE - ELIMINATE THE NEGATIVE!!!!

Reward yourself for compliance (especially on a day it took effort) with a new outfit - it doesn't have to be brand new - consignment and thrift shops have pretty clothes at a fraction of the price of brand new ones.  If we want positive behavior, we have to reward positive behavior - but  we have to learn the value of non-food rewards.  You can do it!!!!!!!!
