  COUNTER THE UNFAIRNESS SYNDROME

This seems to be along the same lines as yesterday

How do you feel when people are eat ting things that you know you should not be eating?

Life isn’t fair but there a lot of people in this world that are a lot worst off than I am. The most unfair thing in my life right now as far as losing weight is that…. I have to work very hard at losing every single pound and once I have lost it I still have to work extra hard to keep it off.
If you look at my weight chart you will see exactly what I am talking about.

If we turn to food when confronted with issues of unfairness, this response card is suggested: “Dieting may not be fair but I have two choices. I can feel sorry for myself, stop following my plan, never reach my goal, and continue to be unhappy with myself. Or I can sympathize with myself but go ahead and do what I need to do. Everyone experiences some kind of unfairness in life. This is one of mine. Besides, the greatest unfairness would be if I let this excuse prevent me from reaching a goal I strongly want to achieve".

Which muscle are you going to work when this issue arises? Give-in or Resist?

Having worked this program last year, I can say that you will soon get over your sense of unfairness as you realize you no longer have a desire for former addicting foods.  This realization came to me suddenly after 2 weeks clean on the program--sometime in week 3.

I was just riding down the road and I rode past a convenience store and didn't stop to get any junk.  I didn't have any junk on the front seat of my car.  It was a true Wow moment.  For the next few months I didn't even think about eating foods that I shouldn't.  My friends and family were amazed.

It may have come too easily because once I did slip after 6 weeks on the program, I didn't know where to turn.  Here we have each other whether we are working the program a program Day over the course of a calendar day or if we are working it slower.

Since I am doing a refresher course, I'm available to help anyone who needs it on the Hunger and Food Troubles Forum at the rate of a program Day per week.  Join in whenever you want.

since this is a refresher for you how did you do on day 12 when you actually had to skip lunch?

I realized that Dr Beck wrote a book ained at all dieters.  However, we are a special class of people following our WLS.  Most of us either have to eat a number of small meals or a few larger meals with nutritious snacks.  I thought it would simply be stupid for me to skip a meal.  So, I didn't.  Similarly, I wouldn't expect a diabetic to skip a meal.  Note that the purpose of thiis step is to show you how uncomforable you are in the absence of food and to compare that to pain levels.  You learn that your cravings are not as bad as you may think they are.

I confess that I can't do this program perfectly.  Huh?  I'm manic-depressive and besides being on meds which allow me to function ( but not work), I have had years of talk therapy in the past.  One thing I learned is that I can't try to be a perfectionist since it sets me up for a bad mental fall.  For me, it's better to have an occasional bite of addictive food than to go nuts stying abstinate.  I know that this is contrary to what an addictions counselor would recommend but I have to do what is best for me.

After I finished the program last year, I made eating mistakes every day but I usually didn't make major mistakes.  I had occasional binges like eating a whole bag of chips over a weekend.  Prior to surgery, a binge was having that on a daily basis along with a half gallon of ice cream every day or two with candy and other junk.  Meals were usually 2-3 helpings.  I simply can't even imagine eating like that--I used to eat about 7,000 cal per day with little or no activity.

I found last year that I was consistently losing weight while eating 1,400 to 1,600 cal per day.  Women can generally consistently lose by eating 1,000 to 1,200 cal per day.  Talk to your doctor if you plan on eating less than that.

I simply couldn't so some of the steps that Dr Beck proposes yet I was still successful.  I'll post about that.

Thanx that is what I was gonna do but I wanted to make sure the rest of us were doing the same.
You are absolutely right the book was written for anyone and we do have a special cir****tance where as it may not be the wisest thing to do skipping a meal. At this point in time I cannot do that either mentally or physically.
None of us are perfect we just do the best we can and keep on moving
Good you are back that says a lot...

sjbob, thanks for the advise its good to hear from those that have been this route once or twice before. I will certainly check out your forum. Feel free to drop in at any time

Melva, I weigh every morning, I use to do it weekly but found I would get on and see I was up 2-3 pounds and then get discouraged and not get on again for 2-3 weeks.

I am thinking that I need to revamp my food plan, it has been a bit of a hit and miss with me.

Free thanks for popping in and letting us know. I hope that  a few of the 60 members that you spoke of will come out from lurking…I’m sure they have lots of valuable information that they could share with us.

Well, I haven't been on internet today.   Had Reintergration stuff to do with my husband's unit.   It was a very hard day, and I spent a lot of time on the unfairness pity pot.     Noone there had gastric bypass so they were eating all of this food.   I did pretty well sticking my plan not perfect, but not too bad.  The chicken they served was too dry and made me sick.    If I would have been at home, I could have put something on it to make it moist.    I also was a poor me stage about being a military wife.   Why does everything have to be so hard, when these other families don't have to send their husbands off, then reintegrate them back into their lives?   I am not sure which is harder the leaving or the coming home.    UGH..I guess that is not really a discussion for a diet board.   I am going to go read some material and try to counteract my sabatoging thoughts.

I hope everyone has a good night tonight, and a good day tomorrow.   I will try to get on but can't promise.  My neice is being inducted into the honor society or something like that tomorrow and it is going to take most of my day.

Bob, thanks for your honesty. Only you know your addictive behaviours and what works best for you. I am really glad to hear that most of the time you can avoid those cravings using Beck’s lessons, and are still loosing weight even though you are not following 100%.

I am glad to hear that even after a year or so you still look to the BDS book , that says volumes for this book.

Melva, keep on moving, your doing great! How are you doing with your food plan? I spent a good part of today thinking about mine and revamping it…Going to try to follow it more strictly this week. There are some other areas that I need to focus on this week like my to do list, its was really hit and miss last week.

April, I’m sorry you had a rough day. I don’t know what it is like to be a military wife, I can only imagine the stress you are under. If you want to talk about it on this board it is alright by me….I would rather you tell us here than have one of those one sided conversation with some evil junk food. So please feel free to share what ever you want here, we want to be here for you to support you. I will continue to pray for you and your hubby. I hope you enjoy celebrating with your niece!!!
