Back On Track Together
Labs
Once again I'm headed into the dreary months with a Vitamin D deficiency. I'm a sunshine baby. My moods, health and overall sense of well being are all linked to my need for sunshine. I got my labs back this morning and this honestly should have been my highest D level of the year (just coming out of the summer months and our outdoor lifestyle). NOPE!!! Lower now than the last draw.
My Doc is changing me up for a little bit. Wants me to do 3 D3gummies in the morning with a glass of milk (lactose free for that intolerance). Has anybody successfully gotten their d levels up and kept them up. Crap, I'd be happy just to not have them drop any further. She also feels like the continually low D levels is the explanation for my aching knees (and other assorted body parts).
Other than that everything was great. My next labs will be again in 6 months.

Hi Iris! Great to "see" you again. Well, you know the story of me and my issues with my back, osteoporosis and endocrine issues. If you're looking for someone who has gotten her Vit D levels up...I'm your girl! Not only did they go up, but they got so high that I had to stop all of my supplements containing D, including my multivits. My D25 hydroxy level done by my endocrinologist in Aug 2013 was 58.8 (therapeutic values are 32-100). I was on dry Vit D3 tabs and taking 10,000 IU daily, PLUS what was already in my multivitamins AND another 400 IU in my calcium citrate tabs for a total of 11,200 mg daily.
My D25 hydroxy 8 months later (including being off my multivits for 6 wks following my completion thyroidectomy) came back at >150 so my endocrinologist took me off ALL Vit D for 6 months. I had to find calcium citrate without added D, which I found at GNC, because I need my calcium very badly. In the meantime, even with this Vit D overload, my bone density was worse than last years, and this ended my surgeons efforts to get my spinal fusion done for spinal instability (but that's another whole story lol).
The latest D25 hydroxy was within normal range at 65.3, so she restarted the Calcium Citrate with D, the multivit and reduced the D3 to 5000 IU 3xweek. So far, so good and we'll do labs again in Dec. BTW, she wasn't the doc who put me on the high doses of D3, but she took over my endocrine issues when my back fracture occurred. She was also the doc who discovered that I had never had a follow-up ultrasound after my thyroid cancer surgery in 1986. She insisted on doing the ultrasound even though it had been 27yrs since the surgery where they removed one lobe of my thyroid. The ultrasound showed a nodule present, and was biopsied the same day. It came back positive for a recurrence of my original cancer! I thank God for her!!!
The completion thyroidectomy was done last Nov...NO lymph node involvement, Thank You Jesus, and all is well!
I am so glad to know that it can be raised (and maintained). Looking back through some lab work, I can see that mine was low prior to even having gastric by-pass so I can see where I was semi-destined for problems. Still wouldn't trade the surgery for anything in this world.
