Even better than sandwich thins (for low carbing)
I just found out about Joseph's Flax, Oat Bran & Whole Wheat Pitas from a post on MFP. I usually eat one ****asionally two) whole wheat sandwich thins per day with my burgers or other sandwiches, but these pitas are THE TRUTH!! I ordered 6 pkgs. from Netrition.com (2.99 for 6 pitas per pkg.), but they're available in some supermarkets also. I just ordered online for the convenience, and they arrived in 4 days.
100% whole wheat sandwich thins: 100 calories, 1g fat, 22g carbs, 5g fiber, 2g sugar, 5g protein
Joseph's flax, oat bran & whole wheat pitas: 60 calories, 2g fat, 8g carbs, 4g fiber, 0g sugar, 6g protein
They are rather thin, and I imagine they won't hold up to really juicy stuffings, but they're great for burgers and regular sandwiches. They're also great for use as a pizza crust, adding sauce and toppings and making your own little low fat, low carb pizzas.
I'm experimenting tonight with a "stuffed pizza pita" cooking turkey sausage or turkey pepperoni, onions, peppers, mushrooms and spices, then adding a little pizza sauce, filling the pitas by peeling back the top layer, adding low fat cheese and spraying the top with olive oil Pam, then baking. I'll figure out the calories as I cook (I weigh and measure everything now) and add it to my MFP database. I'll post my results here also.
I had one for breakfast today with turkey sausage links split in half, an egg and 1/2 oz pepperjack. It was very filling and delicious!
Sounds so wonderful.. Except gluten and I don't get along these days. Would love me some of that. Ugh...

I used to love them... Taste anyway..
Btw: yesterday for lunch I had a burger.(I crave red meat lately - my iron masy be dropping). 2 hours later my belly looked like i swallowed a ball. The cramps were bad also. I think the burger had some fillers - and I know I would not be eating that in this place again.
I need to remember to star asking for special menues when we eat out. Most places have gluten free menus.
On a good note I found gluten- soy - sugar free jerky. So good. Supper expensive but great as a snack. And I need salt. With my low BP and adrenal issues I do much better when I get more salt. (As long as I don't worry about the scale).

The jerky sounds great. I remember eating lots of it when I was a newbie post-op...my surgeon recommended it. Loads of sodium! I'm not hypertensive anymore, but don't like to see the scale effects when I eat higher sodium. But I like to eat it occasionally.
As for the red meat...gotta have it, and sometimes I grind my own using top round for my burgers. I add the fat from the edges if making meatballs or burgers because they are very dense if you don't.
My only allergy issues are with shrimp...a past favorite, but extremely allergic to them since 1994. Not all seafood...just shrimp. Very weird.
