Hernia after 10 years

Just wanted to put out a FYI that after 10 years we are still susceptible  to hernias.

I had open RNY in 2003 then in 2011 they reopened the same incision site to remove a gastric pexi(sp) ring that had broken.

As of about a month ago I suspected a hernia which is now the size of a grapefruit.  Yeah for me.   Due to the size of it there isn't a lot of risk for bowl strangulation as there would be with a smaller tear so I don't have to be rushed to surgery thank goodness.

Doctor thinks it developed at the lower end of the incision and ballooned out.  Having that site opened twice increased the hernia risk.  I'm seeing the surgeon next week to make a plan.

I just wanted to put it out there to remind those farther out that the risk is still there.  I had really forgotten about a hernia possibility.

Been there and done that!  I have had two incisional hernia surgeries.  One at 3 years out and one last year.  This last one was done in conjunction with a FDL TT and both doctors told me that would be the last time I would see that hernia.  I hope they are right.  Good luck getting your taken care of.

I'm in the same (hernia) boat as you and Tess. I was actually born with a hernia that was repaired when I was four. Second one developed after a serous from open RNY in 2006. Like Tess, my third (and possibly others) will be repaired in conjunction with an anchor or fleur de lis tummy tuck next week. Several surgeons have said I will always be prone to them and after the TT I'll be re-inforced but no more heavy lifting, pushing, etc. I'll try my best but I do have a 3 and 5 year old. Good luck with your plan and repair!
