Back On Track Together
Carbs
I am recently new to this great group and this is my first post. I am 5 years post op and have gained about 55lbs of my weightloss back. About 8 weeks ago I decided to go back to basics and I did the 5 day pouch test and I have gone back to the basics, no drinking with meals no white carbs no sugar over 10g. I have lost 20 lbs in the last 8 weeks. (This week I had a 2lb gain????) But I have a question. If I am going to eat carbs how many grams per serving are safe? I have noticed even whole grain food items and sometime high in carbs.
Thanks
Sherri
I think that is a loaded question. What works for one person - may not work for someone else. My goal is to try to make meals that are 2:1:1 (2gr proteins: 1 gr carbs: 1 gr fat) My body works best on that. But that also changes depends of the delivery and type: liquid vs solid, type of sugars, fats, and the time of the day...
Note:
My body is supper sensitive to carbs. Complex or not - I get severe RH. I limit the carbs. I gave up grains (almost all of them) and most starchy carbs (potatoes, beans, starchy veggies, etc) as well as most fruits except berries. I may also gave a bite of 2 of pineapple (with salads or other foods) but overall... I limit most carbs. But then - with my severe RH - I look at white potatoes and I can feel my BS dropping. I am extreme.
Even some "so called" fibers (like the one in quest bars) affect my BS not in a good way. I learn toi measure my BS when I introduce new foods - new meals combination.
I have a friend who can eat bread, and rice, and she eats that in moderation - together with proteins and fats.
You need to find a balance for you: i.e. you can monitor how the made you feel - were you full - then really hungry in 1-2 hrs after?
When I eat food that affects my BS - I get hungry much faster than when I eat food that do not do that. Some carbs also cause more gas, and I hate feeling so out of control, specially for a person with a full time job, that tries to go to yoga after work. Yoga and gas do not mix,,,
I learned that gluten affects me like that, so I gave it up. Beans - I can't digest - no matter how many different enzymes I take - it is bad when I had to change room in a middle of the night because the gas smells so bad... Not even mentioning the pain the gas causes. Same for me is with soy, or some veggies...

Welcome to BOTT,
I also limit carbs, no white carbs, no sugar, no grains except ONE ****asionally 2) whole wheat sandwich thins per day if eating a sandwich, and NO starchy vegs. I do some fruits in moderation (peaches lately) and will not allow my favorites (watermelon and cherries) in the house because I have a weakness for them. I do all leafy green vegs, and some salads. I find that eating a bowl of greens like cooked kale, cabbage, collards etc. will keep me full between meals if need be, and also aid in digestion (for very few calories if not cooked in fat). Lots of gas though, but I don't mind :)
I don't do desserts other than SF pudding occasionally, and usually just have a piece of fruit or a large iced coffee (made at home) as a treat. I don't always count carbs per se, but keep track of them using myfitnesspal.com. I also know that the total for the day reflects total carbs, not "net carbs", so the actual carb count is lower.
I started with the pouch test when I joined this site in Feb, and let me tell you...it did the job for me. I can't trust myself with simple carbs and sugars, so I refuse to eat them. Great job on your weight loss, and looking forward to reading more from you
