Back To Bariatrics Basics! Had my Dr. Appt!!

Ok, so..  I just got home from my appointment with Dr. Giselle Hamad and her PA... they both seem like very nice, very competent people, and really listened to me!

First... I was told in no uncertain terms... no more latte's until I reach my goal.  That is going to be extremely difficult for me... I'm addicted, but with help... I'll do my best!!cool

Second.. I have to stop taking the occassional (that was becoming more frequent) Ibuprofen.  OUCH.. My back, knees and legs are already hurting more! .

I was referred for Nutritional counseling.. and I'm looking forward to it!

The thing I REALLY liked about the Dr was that she said.. "One step at a time" and didn't immediately jump to revision surgery!  Gonna try it this way first and that is OK by me!!

I also got orders for blood work, and I was told that my/our vitamin regimen was right on point!  Yeah!!

Then.. on my way home, I stopped for my LAST latte... and sipped it to oblivion.. also had a brownie, which is NOT good for me and which I am now paying for in spades, but.... no more.  It was kind of a last hurrah!  Now the Dr will be monitoring me, so I HAVE to be good.  I think this is JUST what I needed!!!!

When you say "no more lattes" are you talking the full blown version or coffee in general? As long as its the full blown version you can find some very tasty substitutes using sugar free, low fat and even decaf options. I've gotten to the point that I think the ones I make at home this way are even better.

I feel your pain on the no IBUPROFEN. Tylenol Arthritis strength is just barely better than nothing at all but oh what I'd give for just one dose of the "good stuff" when I'm hurting. Between the WLS and history of ulcers I just can't risk it.

Keep us posted on the nutritional counseling. I'm still looking for a good, competent nutritionist who understands the needs of bariatric patients a few years after surgery. It really shouldn't be this hard to find one but alas my search continues.

Good Luck!!!

Iris.. I have always preferred the f/f, s/f versions of latte's... but even they have calories from the milk and my Dr. said NO CALORIC DRINKS while trying to lose.  Protein drinks should not exceed 120 calories and they are a meal or snack replacement until I am where I want to be weight wise...

It will be incredibly hard for me, but I am determined to follow her advice.  My DH and I are both addicted to Starbucks, you see... and... UGH!!   So..  I had my last one last night.  I cannot swear that I won't have one on occasion... but I will do my best.  After all.. I'm going to her for help to get the regained weight off.. wouldn't do much good if I didn't take her advice, eh?  LOL

Milk have so much sugar... and I dump on 'that.
I love coffee: I make my own espresso , add stevia and unsweet coconut milk. I use 1/2 cup of coconut or almond milk (unsweet) for my 2 large espresso. 1/2 cup is app 25 calories... And that is like my morning 'snack' . then breakfast is at 10ish...
I am trying to lose 10 lbs so I started adding less and less on coconut milk to my coffee...
When in Starbucks - I ask for Americana - hot or cold - add sf sweetener and a splash of half and half. Adds richness with not a lot of calories...

I have actually started using unsweetened almond milk and Truvia in my coffee at home.. and I might have 2 or 3 cups a week... not a huge "regular" coffee drinker...  I really LOVE latte's.. and always had them s/f, ff... and yes, even then the milk makes me "hot".. I have a hot flash and sweat... but...    I'll actually try to stay out of Starbucks for a while as I don't think that right now I have the strength to say no to my latte!!

I am making my DH stay away from them as well.. he drinks light fraps... but.. we have had A LOT of Starbucks ..  I can only imagine the money we will save!!!

Glad you had a good visit with the doctor.  It is great that they listen to you and what you have to say.   I feel your pain about Ibuprofen.  I take it every once in a great while for pain.  Tylenol just doesn't do it for me.  Most times, I just deal with the pain because Tylenol doesn't help.  I am interested in your nutritional counseling.  Is this a dietitian?  I am looking for someone in my geographical area and all I find is the dietitian at the local hospital.  Great news on the blood work!  Keep up the good work!  angry
