Still trying to get enough protein and keep calories down
Working at trying to get some weight off and my problem is still with protein. I don't want to use all my calories for protein and I really have a hard time getting in 60. So how people get 100 and more in I woundn't know. I have a sluggish thyroid that I take meds for and it still is hard to swallow many meats. Not fond of eggs. Protein shakes are good but high in calories. I'm walking 60 minutes a day and I'm losing about a pound a week. Very slow. Anyone have suggestions on protein foods that will help. I had surgery RNY 2006.
Not sure why would you say that protein drinks are high in calories.
a typical whey isolate may deliver 2-25 gr of proteins for 100 calories.
I.e. About Time Whey isolate (ATW)
MRM whey concentrate,
Nectar proteins, etc.
If you mix that in water (not in milk) then you can get the proteins very easily.
I may take 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt (10+ gr of protein) - mix that with 1 scoop of ATW, and add some sweetener and i have one of my meals ~ 160 calories, 30+ gr of proteins.
Every gr of protein is "worth" 4 calories - so 100 gr protein = 400 calories. I know I can do that.
I do limit starches and sugars (they make me hungry) and eat mostly non-starchy veggies, meat, fish, cheese, some eggs, some nuts. But I do avoid any bread - pasta- crackers, and fruits. (beans also do not work for me - I can't digest them and end up with a lot of pain and gas)

Humm! Well, I get the bulk of my protein in first think in the morning with a protein shake. I buy the Body Fortress Super Advance Whey Protein in Vanilla only there are two others Strawberry and Chocolate from Walmart about $13 dollars for 2 pounds and from that I use two scoops of powder which equals to 270 calories and 52 grams of Protein.
Now I do one of three different things with my protein shakes.
1. If I make a fruit smoothies I use Diet V8 Splash which has only 10 calc per 8 ozs and no more than a cup of Frozen fruit which the base is 1/3 piece of frozen banana, a slice of frozen Mango and a few chucks of Frozen Pineapple or Blueberries which add only 10 calc so my smoothie comes to about 380 calc and 52 grams of protein
2. If I just want a shake I still use 2 scoops of protein powder, 8 oz of cold brewed coffee from the day before and add in 1/4 tsp of Sugar free White Choc instant pudding a total of 280 cal and still 52 grams of protein.
3. 2 scoops of protein powder 8 oz of water and 1/2 tsp of Sugar Free Instant Pudding (Banana, Chocolate, White Chocolate, Strawberry, etc) about 290 calc and still 52 grams of protein.
I do tend to eat a lot of Shrimp because it's higher in protein pre serving than beef or pork.
I had my surgery RNY July 2000. I dropped from 309 pounds to 155 pounds. However I came up to my goal weight of 175/188 and was very comfortable and happy at that weight. As of yesterday I am up 35 pound from my 175 so I am back to basic (its all stress related for me) but I am working on it!

Viva,
Many people use food for protein sources. Some of the best sources for high proteins and low cal (relatively) are eggs, egg whites. Greek yogurt (plain), cottage cheese, fish and meats.
Some people use beans - but I personally can't - they make me sick.
Lean ground meat - may be a great source for proteins: meatloaf, browned with taco seasoning, in stew or soups or as meatballs... so many options. When my pouch is "sensitive" - dense proteins may not sit too well - but ground meat is like a soft choice - more of a slider... It can be very lean...but I do like a bit of fat in mine - so I typically use equal amount turkey and lean ground beef or bison.
