Sleep problem after RNY - due to RH ...
Sllep problem that is due to low blood sugar
With my lovely Reactive Hypoglycemia (RH) due to RNY - now I also deal with partial insomnia - sleep problem - due to that.
To control my RH - I do follow very low carb diet. Proteins, fats and some veggies, or complex carbs. More than 15 - 20 gr of carbs or more than 5-10 gr of sugar at one meal - even when I eat them with fat and proteins may result in a really low blood sugar 1-2 hrs after a meal.
During the day I usually eat every 2-3 hrs. I also learned to eat just before I go to bed. And I mean - immediately before I go to bed. But I noticed that I often wake up with morning headache, or even worse - wake up in a middle of the night drenched in sweat - with my heart going crazy... I blamed that on my menopause, and just being hot, or night dreams. In the past I would wake up with low blood sugar issue - but I blamed that on more carbs I allowed myself to have before bed, or even the occasional glass or 2 of wine. But lately I really watch what I eat. I don't eat many carbs, and the ones I eat are complex, I gave up wine... so what's with that?
I think due to low carb diet and my post op RNY RH - I also become hypoglycemic.
The difference? RH - only shows its ugly face when I eat too many carbs. But Hypoglycemia - that also means that I get the low blood sugars when i don't eat for more than a few hours. Great! Just great!
So what is happening in my body when my blood sugar drops below "safe level"
During hypoglycemic episode - or low blood sugar the brain detects low blood sugar and will release adrenalin, a hormone that your body naturally uses to raise blood sugar when it gets low. The adrenaline is also the hormone that may raise your blood pressure, your heart rate and makes you alert or even irritable. The excessive adrenaline may be the reason for me to feel fully awake at 2- or 3 am. I am pumped with adrenaline. That will wake me up and keep me there until my body uses that - an hr r few hrs - depends how much adrenaline was released. That also will make adrenals tired - when it is time for them to wake up and work in the morning.
Result - sleepiness at night - and being tired during the day. Be able to sleep only 4-5 hrs at a time – that’s something I did not anticipated when I had RNY – another lovely side effect.
That's great! Just great! Another RNY side effect I really do not need.

I am so sorry for all your issues with RNY. I had a weird weekend myself. My sugar dropped twice on Saturday while out shopping and later when I had supper it did not stay down. I finally had to call it a nite at 8:00 pm. On Sunday, I had issues with food again at lunch. Finally was able to keep something down for dinner. I guess as we get further out more issues surface with RNY surgery. I hope you can get some sleep tonight.
