Has anyone ever tried doing the atkins diet to help get back on track?  I'm thinking of doing this to helpme out.  I've been off work since june of last year do to medical issues that involve dizziness and balance issues.  I'm up to 52 pills a day, 2 of which are steroids..one is predisone.  All I want to do is eat, eat, eat even though I never feel hungry.  I have put on 30 pounds and I hate it.  So I'm decieding that enough is enough!  I want my life back and I feel the first stepis to get my eating back on track.  So I thought of the atkins diet but I will take any help or suggestions I can get..thanks and have a great day

pre op, I was an expert at Atkins. Actually, a friend's heart doctor recommended it to her and I followed what he said. Basically Atkins induction for two weeks and two days 'off'. Basically I had every other weekend to eat what I wanted. I was able to lose 5 pounds every two weeks. I only weighed in on the Friday of my free weekend.

Checkout the Atkins website. Last I checked it was free. There is an entire list of induction friendly foods, message boards, recipes and even web courses on how to follow the plan. Foods are Basically meats, poultry, fish and shellfish, most veggies, eggs and some cheeses. You can do alot with these you just need to get creative. Last time I tried it, I found I didnt lose the same when I started with the bars, bake mixes and prepackaged things. Whole foods worked best for me. And the every other weekend thing made it easier to stay on track knowing that I could have whatever treat I had been craving soon.

I havent tried it post op, but have been considering it.

I do follow modified Atkins diet. That is the only way I do not get high and low BS issue and can control my Reactive hypoglycemia. (RH)
Modified -
I do not consume many sugar alcohols - my body reacts to most of them except the erythritol.
I do eat fat - but I still dump on too many fat grams - so I eat only as much as my body allows me to.
I do not eat starchy carbs - and limit my fruits to one serving a day - but still eat that with fat and proteins first - then can have a fruit. Any other way - and my Blood sugar (BS ) may spike and then crash.
I do use fiber - but not just any fiber (that is also carbs - and with my RNY - that may also cause spike and then drop in my BS) but I use mostly seeds base (flax meal, chia seeds, etc) or whole veggies fiber (with the said veggies).
My calories comes 40% -45 % from proteins, 35-40%+ from fat and the rest is complex carbs. (with exception of some fruits).

i.e 1200 calorie diet - I would eat app 120gr protein =480 calories, 30-40 gr of net carbs (i do count only 1/2 of the one from seeds and nuts ) and the rest is fat , I usually try to make sure that my meal / snack has no more half of fat as proteins. i.e. item that has 10 gr of fat per serving - need to have at least 20 gr of proteins.
The problem when you try to limit carbs - is that you either have to eat proteins or fat - so balance is the key.

And fat free proteins - just do not keep me full - but add some fat to them - and I will forget to eat for 2-4 hrs.

Atkins is fine just use lean protiens so a little more south beach I guess.  I like the protien bars to help with the sugar or sweet cravings. They add protien and make my sweet tooth stop shouting at me.

May God give me peace to greet each day as it comes.
