Back Issues
Hey everyone,
Has anyone had issues with back problems, specifically, the healing of problems since your surgery? At the beginning of March, Alabama wa**** by another series of tornadoes that hit several neighborhoods in the Huntsville/Hazel Green area. I had a friend whose house was seriously damaged due to falling trees and my church was also damaged. For three days I cut up and piled up trees. That Monday I woke up with severe pain that sent me to the doctor. After a week of poking, x-rays, and a MRI, I was diagnosed with a compression fracture of my T7 vertebrae. I wore a brace for three weeks and actually started back on the elliptical on week six with very little pain. Two weeks later, I'm walking down a hallway and the severe pain returns. I'm back in the brace with no relief after three weeks sending me back for a MRI today. Although I was struggling before the injury to maintain my weight, I have religiously taken my bariatric vitamins to include the Bariatric Advantage (BA) Multi-vitamin, BA vitamin D, and BA Calcium.
So has anyone out there had any issues with bone problems healing? I'm really struggling to maintain my weight with a 20 pound gain since the original injury. I have maintained my current weight for three weeks now but it is a struggle when you are only allowed two 15 minute walks a day. I'm not looking for a magic cure but maybe a different direction to go in or maybe something I can bring up to my ortho.
Thanks,
Ed

Hi Ed:
When was the last time you had labs drawn? You could possibly have a deficiency in Vit D or Vit B-12. How have your protein levels been and calicum levels. All of these could pertain to your healing from the fracture.
As for the weight, I would go protein heavy and carb lightly, no drinking with meals and see if I can find a satisfactory place that I could maintain or lose without to much stress on my body.

The last labs were great for both Vit D & B-12. Calcium levels were good but I'm not sure about protien. I lost five pounds this past week, mainly by increasing protiens. I am now cheduled for a bone density scan to make sure the blood labs are consitent with the bone density.
I talked with a friend today who is an OR nurse and she confirmed that I'm seeing the best surgeon in North Alabama, so I feel comfortable with my care. He is also very up on bariatruc surgery and bone issues but he confessed that he see more bone density problems in women rather that men.
