Do you suffer from "low blood sugar attacks"?
Hi Botts,
I had something scary happen this weekend and wanted to share and see if you have experience this also?
I have had these attacks before but this one was scary. I can tell when they are coming on but never had a "black out" before. I feel lightheaded, hot and sweaty, can't focus on anything. Kinda like a cloudy state, then I get cold. Normally I eat something and feel better. This time I "think" I ate something and the next thing I remember waking up the next morning. Yep, nothing was turned off downstairs, changed clothes, went to bed and don't remember a darn thing
Now here is the kicker, I wake up feeling so tired all the time. This morning I felt like my old self energized and ready to run a race? What is up with that? I have an appointment to see my PCP but I feel I need to go back to my surgeon. It's going on 6 years for me.
Have you ever had this happen before? If so, can you share?
Thanks,
Kathy

My attacks started exactly 6 years post-op. I was at dinner with friends, stood up to walk to another table and hit the floor, woke up and they were trying to move me to another room and after two steps, out like a light again.
I went to my PCP since my surgeon is 6 hours away. He ordered a 4 hour glucose tolerance test and 2 hours in I passed out in the lobby of the testing lab. They took an extra sample to get a rush reading. My doc called that afternoon and said my blood sugar was 28. He said there is not much I can do outside of diet modifications. I have to be sure I eat every 2-3 hours, that includes protein and a complex carbohydrate. No eating straight carbs or I am out one to two hours later. I also carry glucose tablets with me in case I feel an attack coming on. It has been almost a year now and I have pretty much kept it in check, just a few really bad episodes.
Best of luck on your appointment, I hope you find some answers.

Sounds like Reactive Hypoglycemia; I'm subject to feeling "the trembles" and very cranky. It usually happens when I haven't eaten in 4-5 hours.
This is why I eat frequent small meals; protein and small amounts of complex carbs. Can't do sugar except in very small quantities (like a lactose in a s/f hot chocolate, etc.).
What do your labs look like? Are you OK in the B vitamins and iron?
Tiredness can also be a function of low thyroid. Check for a high THS number on your labs. This usually means a thyroid malfunction.
Other than that, I'm not a professional, so yes, please see your surgeon or PCP.

I do - but not to the point of blacking out ... but unless I am careful - I may get there one day...

If my blood sugar falls below 100, I feel jittery and nervous inside....which tells me that I need to eat something. I try to eat something at least every three hours or so. As others have said, protein with a complex carb might be the best thing. Simple carbs can really cause the blood sugar to take a deep fall in some people. That is very scary, Kathy!
