Back On Track Together
new to BOTT.. not new to my RNY
My heaviest weight was on my day of surgery. I weighed 335lbs. My lowest weight was at 1.5 years post op at 205lbs. I got discouraged not breaking 200 after working out 5 days a week and keeping my protein and calories and water perfect. I still was very healthy and my doc was more then happy. I'm 5'9 and so I wore that 205lbs pretty good. I was running 3 miles a day and a size 16.
Today I weigh 250lbs. The wake up call came when I went to my closet and realized that nothing fit me "right" anymore. So instead of going to the store to buy a bigger size.. I'm here.
BOTT seems to be a great place to help and be helped. I'm looking forward to getting in here and learning and changing and being who I really am.. healthy and happy and living life!
What are some of the things you all did to help get back on track? Mindsets that changed? Habits that you found helpful?
This week I've been concentrating on my water intake and vitamins. My goal has been to drink 90oz a day (what I used to drink at my healthiest) I've already taken all carbonated drinks out of my diet again. My justification for them being "diet" doesn't seem to fly anymore. I'm also walking everyday for 45 minutes.
The protein drinks that I used to live on have so many artificial sweeteners and chemicals that I've found to be very intolerant of. My doctor recommended I get off of those with aspartame and other artificial flavors to curb my headache attacks. I have to say.. removing that stuff from my diet has curbed my headaches, so I'm looking for a more "whole food" alternative to protein shakes. Any ideas? Are there more "natural" protein shakes?
I've also been eating breakfast every morning again. I can almost guarantee that my weight started creeping on when I stopped drinking my water and started skipping breakfast. I'm hoping this will help.
thanks everyone for reading and any input you can give..

Welcome to BOTT!
Cathy posted guidelines for getting back on track, it's at the top of the forum. It's really helpful. It seems like you know what you have to do. The only thing that I can think of is to start writing down everything that you eat. Make sure you come here and post about you workout and menu.
Good luck!
Deb
You hit the nail on the head - our problem is about .01% physical and 99.99% mental/emotional. A couple of things I do when I'm struggling (and even though I've lowered my goal weight and am MAINTAINING (for the first time in my life - I still have days when I struggle) is repeat this about 100 times a day (my mantra on those days) Hunger DOES NOT = emergency. We would never admit it to ourselves or anyone else, but our actions speak so loudly we can't hear our words - we believe we will die on the spot if we do not give in to a craving. Doubt tha****ch how we act. We eat, eat, eat!
I found out it takes as much, if not more, effort to maintain as it did to lose. I know, for me, it is a MUST that I plan my food at least 1 day ahead (better if it's 2 or 3 days), write it down and follow it regardless of whether I think I'm hungry or not. I know calories still count the same way they did before surgery and I know my daily limit. I plan my food within that limit. When the day actually comes, I may change my mind about the exact food I'm going to eat, but I stay within my calorie & carb limit. I get lots of protein.
You're right breakfast is essential - our bodies have been the longest without nourishment at breakfast time. Doesn't have to be a lot but does not to contain protein. Protein isn't a choice - it's a life and death essential for us. First your protein, then your water, then other healthy foods. The guidelines are a great source of direction.
There are two threads here that many of us use daily - Cardio & Cafe and BOTT 911. We are here to help and support each other. Please let us know how we can be of help to you. You've already taken the most important step - you have reached out and asked for help.
Thank you for allowing us to share your journey. WE CAN DO THIS TOGETHER - YES WE CAN!!!!!!!
Again, WELCOM!!!

Hi Shakeira
being here kips me aware of struggles so many have.
As for protein drinks - there are some that have mostly natural ingredients. IMO - the simple way would be to buy a natural , unflavored Whey protein - then you can add ting as needed.
I try to use stevia as a sweetener, natural vanilla, natural cocoa, etc. It takes a bit to try and mix it yourself - but sometimes it is worth the trouble.
You can also buy some protein powder that use stevia - and other natural ingredients. You can try to go to the Vitamin Shoppe or GNC and ask them for recommendation. Rob Roy's Whey protein - does not use artificial stuff. (well...) It does not taste as good as some of the "altered" mixes, but - it is good enough. try to buy a small package first. I think other companies have natural whey proteins - I think you can talk to Vitalady. com - and they can tell you if they have any "natural" protein powders.
I try not to use Aspartame. But I can (I think I can) tolerate splenda. Eventually I would like to give that up - but for now- I use it.
FYI _ I noticed that the "natural" mixes are unfortunately more expensive than the "other" stuff...
