Volumetrics
Hi, guys! I read an interesting article on Runner's World online about using "volumetrics" in planning meals. It basically said that, all things being equal, most people consume about 3 pounds of food per day. People that eat more dry, high-carb and condensed foods tend to be on the higher end of the weight spectrum, while those who eat high-volume, low calorie foods that are mostly water tend toward the lower end.
Seems simple, right? A diet high in unprocessed fruits, veggies and good quality protein trumps a diet consisting of Cheetos, donuts and filet mignon. But the cool thing is that in implementing the high-volume idea, people had more successful weight loss than those who just cut calories while eating the same type of diet as before.
Last night I made chili, but added two small zucchini and a summer squash to the mix. It still tasted like chili, but instead of being 260 calories per cup, it rocked out at 150! What an awesome concept. And the boys got a healthier meal that filled them up just as much.
I am going to keep trying this concept and I'll keep you guys posted as to how it's working out!
