What's the deal with DS revisions?

Has anyone here had a revision? If so, what one?

I keep reading here and there across the main forum about people preaching/advocating/advertising how wonderful life is with their DS...

"well why'd you pick RNY when you could have had a DS?"

"Have you ever considered a DS revision?"

"Mine was the best thing I ever did...."

Honestly, I find these sorts of questions a little annoying (and pretentious, but I think that's because of my lack of understanding).... Especially when they're advocating someone go through MORE surgery when their original one has "failed them".... and really, how can they know that for sure?

I cruised around the DS boards and didn't really learn anything from it. I looked at how a revision from RNY to DS is diagrammed and still don't get it. What the heck? How does a RNY to DS revision work and why are they just so utterly fantastic? Anyone here have JUST a DS (no revision)? I think I'll x-post this to the main forum and the DS board too, but I wanted to ask a place I felt more safe first. I trust in BOTT not to bite my head off or chide me for my ignorance (unlike i've seen across some other boards, saddly)

So really, what's the deal?

I've wondered this myself - thanks for being brave enough to ask!!  Mindyou, here is the safest place to be so open...

Well.... I got brave.

Okay, I got impatient. I asked the main forum, and someone there put a shout out to the DS board (which I felt too uncomfortable posting this on).... and I've gotten KILLER responses. Here....

Thanks Sion

very interesting reading and not have to sort through rants from people bent on tuning people to 'their' side

can I just check I've understood this right - the DS works by greater malabsorption than the RNY and it removes the hunger feeling?  Is that it?  Whereas the RNY works by restriction, less malabsorption and dumping?

Sorry to be a bit dense...!!!

Looks like that's more or less it, yes. They actually remove the stomach no longer used as well. Seems the piece they take out contains the glands that release hunger hormones, therefore you do not feel hunger. It also restricts intake as it is more a "sleeve", or long pouch-like entity, so your portion size is reduced.

They also seem to bypass a greater amount of intestine than the RNY does, and somehow that boosts metabolism.

The biggest part seems to be that they do not create a stoma, but rather leave the valve at the bottom of the stomach, so food can and does remain there longer, leaving a longer lasting feeling of fullness, and does not let you dump. I found it all very interesting!!

Are you thinking of a revision?  I've toyed with the idea on and off for ages as I never reached my goal and am still in the overweight class, but I was self pay and would end up paying more for a revision than I did for the original surgery.

On a good day I don't think I need it as I've improved my health 100% which was the original reason, but then on a bad day all I see is the fat still on my body and the fat that I've been stuck at this weight since about 9 months out and get totally frustrated.

Since joining BOTT my attitude has been much more healthy towards it all, so thanks everyone for your help.  I'd rather be a BOTTer than go through another surgery if it's not necessary

I'm not right NOW, but know what's out there is never a bad thing. apparantly many RNY'ers have a hard struggle for the rest of their lives because of how our bodies adapt to the surgery. Between a stretched stoma, growing more villi for added absorbtion, and our intestines actually, physically growing longer... its sometimes not our faults when we struggle so hard.

I guess I at least wanted the information if it came right down to it and I couldn't get control back again. I am in control now, at least I feel I am, and I think I can succesd (ALSO THANKS TO BOTT!). But who knows what 10 years and a few kids may bring, you know?
