Fish Oil to Lower Triglyceride Levels ???
I'm going to try to add Fish Oil therapy to my diet to battle my elevating triglyceride levels. I bought Nature Made Liquide Softgel 1200 mg Fish Oil Gels. The package says to take one to two two times daily with meals. Does anyone have any recommendations post gastric bypass as to what an adequate dosing might be??? I wonder if the absorption of these is any different after gastric bypass surgery? Comments are appreciated.

Seems to me I read something about this.... but for the life of me don't remember. You can always try Googling it. I think the benefits of fish oil are the same that are in flax seed? Is it Omega 3's? My brain is mush tonight but I will try to remember. I read a lot of health mags and all the info blurs together. Lot a good it does me... ha ha.
Here is a link I found while I was googling around... don't know anything about the site personally.

My PCP and I talked about this about a year ago, because I don't get enough Omega 3s (not a fish/seafood eater), and decided that it would be easier to use flax seed in with food vs. the capsules. Neither of us were sure if, post WLS, the capsules would digest well enough to reap the benefits. Flax seed has the Omega 3s in it as well. I use ground flax seed, and enjoy the taste...kinda nutty. Hope that helps. :)
I like the idea of the flaxseed with food much better than the fishoil capsules. I sprinkle flaxseed on my cottage cheese and yogurt and even in my salads. I like it a lot. For some reason my triglycerides are increasing and my PCP says not enough Omega 3s to keep me in balance. So I'm going to try to take the 1200 mg Fish Oil Liquid softgels twice a day and see if it makes any difference. How much Flax seed does your PCP recommend per day? Thanks for your help.

Hi, Kathy:
I have been taking 1 - 2 tbsp. a day. I just had labs done, and I am waiting for him to review the results, so I will see if he needs me to increase it or if that is sufficient. I'll let you know once I hear.
In the meantime, good luck with the fish oil. It certainly is a great way to get the Omega 3s!

Kathy,
I hope you do not mind i jump in.
A few things:
Flax seed oil is similar to fish oil - but not the same. If you can use fish oil in capsule and flax seed on food.
Flax seed: The seeds are very hard so we can not digest that unless it is ground = flax meal. Flax spoils very easily - so make sure if you use that - keep it in the fridge or the freezer.
If you use raw flax meal - up to 2-3 tbs per day - but flax meal can be added to other foods: oatmeal, add to soups to thicken them, add to any baked goods including meatloaf.
Flax meal has not only the beneficial fat but some proteins and - fiber.
Fish oil: I take fish oil in capsules but I prefer the coromega - it is really tasty - you can find that in different health food stores (GNC, Vit Shoppe or on line) tastes good - it is almost like a dessert for me. It is a bit more expensive - but some days - i can not take any pills ... lol

Please always feel free to jump into any of the posted threads... especially mine :-). I'm always looking for good advice on here. I use flax meal in and on things the most... and yes I store it on the door inside my freezer. Using fish oil is something new to me... I've just started it and wonder if my next labs will reflect any positive strides. Thanks for sharing the websites on the Coromega... I've never heard of that and look forward to checking it out. I need all the help I can get as I lost a very small percentage of my extra weight and never got even close to my goal weight. Every day is a struggle and I will keep trying. Look forward to reading more of you posts.
Thanks,
Kathy
