Carb Question

Hi, All --

I hope everyone's having a happy and safe Memorial Day Weekend!

I have a question for everyone:  Since surgery, I have been keeping track of carb, protein, fat and calorie intake.  With carbs, I have just been keeping track of "carbs" -- not taking into account "net carbs."  With the onset of summer and all of the great fruit out there, I am realizing that it is probably the "net carbs" I need to be concerned with -- any thoughts?  I always make sure the carbs I take in are the "good carbs" (whole grains, legumes, etc.) -- however, when I incorporate those, my carb intake count skyrockets.

I have been using FitDay to track everything -- don't see how I can track only "net carbs."  Anyone know of a program that takes it into account?

Any feedback would be appreciated!  :)

Hi Cindy,
I struggle with the carb monster all the time here . My nutritionalist told me that carbs are not a friend to any post op bariatric patient. In a "Nut" shell... I was told to keep all carbs down to no more than 2 per meal... that is a total of 30 net carbs per meal. So that is a goal of 6 servings of carbs per day. However I can get up to 8 of the 15gram servings in a day...but no more. Not always the easiest thing to do when you like carbs!!! I too track my carb, protien , fat and calorie intake. The numbers my nutritionalist has me goaling for now is 6 carbs or 90grams, 70-80 protien, 30grams of fat and a 1200 caloric intake per day.  I've been crunching numbers and this formula isn't always the easiest to live up to.  My Nutritionalist told me that three snacks are allowed...but those should be protien no fat choices if at all possible. Not sure if all this helps but thought I'd share the input I got from my NUT.

Good morning, Kathy.  That information is a big help to me.  I have been keeping up with the carb count, but never took into account the net carbs, only total carbs.  Of late, the ole carb monster has been riding my back too, and I have never been a big carbaholic, but I seem to be yearning for "crunchy" things, and so many of those are carbs.  AGH.  I appreciate the info your NUT gave you on intake, that helps a lot too.  Again, thanks!  Happy Memorial Day!  :)

Hi Cindy,
Doesn't it figure our carb monster would have to be one of those things that goes "Crunch" in our day :-).  Good luck on your journey. Happy Memorial Day to you too  .

Kathy, I really like the way the nutrienist put that. So easy to follow. I will have to use them guidelines myself. 1200 is what I try to stick with but it is nice to see it broken down. My nutrienist would never give me a calorie intake to go by. Thanks for sharing. See you lighter. Joanne

Ho Joanne,
Glad you found the info from my NUT helpful. It is a lot of number counting...but it gives me a goal for planning my daily meals. Not always the easiest to balance out...but I'm trying. Hope to see me lighter too by one of the upcoming friday weigh ins ... lots of juggling til then...   .
Hope things are going better for you today.

I used to use fitday.com, I now use myfitnesspal.com for whatever reason, I just like that they have so many more foods in their database.

You calculate your own net carbs. Its very easy. Take your total carb intake, minus your fiber (non-soluable carb you can't absorb) and whammo.... you have your net carb total. Easy Peasy.

I only ever count net carbs because you simply don't absorb the non-soluable carbs. Makes sense to me, I guess.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info!  I have always wondered about the net carbs, and this has been a big help.  I will also check out myfitnesspal.com -- thanks for that tip as well!  :)
