Lack of sleep kills appetite?

Hey all.

So for all reasons my own I ended up really not sleeping much last night. I'm talkin maybe 2 good REM hours. Part stress, part anger, all silly. I haven't NOT slept in a very long time. I'm generally in the 8-10 hour a night range on a good normal night. So I'm struggling to keep my head up at work today. A few coffees in, lots of water.... but I'm really not hungry. Like I have no cravings, no desire to eat, taste, chew... I want to sleep. I have been eating properly all day but I feel like I'm forcing it. I guess its a good opprotunity to cut back on some calories until I get some rest, but is this something anyone knows about? Does sleep deprivation kill the appetite? I'm not cranky or moody. Just sleepy. I actually pulled out some Wasa crisp breads to chew on to keep myself awake but even after 1 I didn't want to look at them anymore. And I LOVE Wasas.

Anyhoo, my sleepytime rambling could go on forever, so I'll leave it at that.

When I saw my surgeon last  week for my 2nd checkup surgiversary, the comment was that lack of sleep can make one crave things (like chocolate) and gain weight.  I've read a couple articles over the last year via Prevention magazine about the same thing.

My own experience with true lack of sleep (like when a newborn comes home) is similar to yours.  No appetite (and the baby weight just melted off).  I think it depends on the person.  I think some people eat and drink (caffeine) to get the extra jolt of energy, and end up overeating.  Some people just don't eat.  I remember I was just so tired I was "jittery", which made my stomach feel blah.  I had friends and family members who had to coax me to eat to keep up my energy to take care of the baby.  I remember thinking why can't I have this lack of appetite all the time!
