Friday Reflections

Hi BOTTers,

I've been thinking a great deal about my friend.  I dedicate this Friday Reflections to her.  I wrote about her in my Thursday Cafe & Cardio.  She is 33 years old, overweight and smoke(d).  She cane as close to dying as someone can with a 99% heart blockage.  Her husband and two young children are understably scared they will lose her.

I must admit that I've taken my own health for granted throughout the years.  Even though I was morbidly obese for years, I had relatively good health. A short time before I made the decision to have surgery, I found out I was diabetic.  From the pre-op tests, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and a few other minor co-morbidities but even then I believe I was in good health considering my yo-yo dieting and morbid obesity.

Having surgery, my health has improved substantially.  I've had a few things come up (herniated disc in my neck) but nothing that has been a huge red siren for my health - until this with my friend.

The close call with my friend has driven home how precious of a treasure our life is.  No matter our chronological age or medical history, our health is never to be taken for granted.  In the matter of a day, so much can change.  In the morning my friend was going about her life and early afternoon she was being rushed to the hospital, close to death.

If it sounds as though this has shaken me up, it has.  Of course, for my friend and her close family.  It has also refocused me on my own health and being proactive to do the best that I can every single day to treasure my own precious health.  Just as the relationships we have with our loved ones, our health isn't something to be taken for granted but nurtured and cherished.

I have committed to myself to do something for myself every day to promote and enhance my health and happiness.

Take care, Cathy

Cathy Thanks for the post, it just reinforced my reasons for deciding to have GB. My date has been set for June 8th. I have so many health issues and at 55 years of age feel like I am slowed to the pace of some 70 year old. I have got to do something my live with my children and grandchildren is passing me by, I can't sit by and watch anymore. Thanks again, Cathy

Hey Cathy great insight. Sometimes it takes being confronted with the reality of our decisions to open our eyes. I have been praying for your friend and for you that you will be able to support her in her choices. Email me if you need to.
