5 Day Pouch Test

I know some must be curious as to how I did. Well it wasn't as easy as I thought it was going to be. I thought hmmm 5 days how hard can it be? LOL The first 2 days was all liquids. Mostly on the first day I drank protein shakes. I tried to get my family to understand that I should be drinking more protein shakes than what I am, but it's like everytime I drink something (and maybe it's just me being too self conscious) but I always think that they think "should you be having that? again?" I had 3 protein shakes that day and soup for dinner. The second day I was really cold after my first protein drink so when I next ate I had a bowl of cream of broccoli soup. My only concern about the soups was that I wasn't getting enough protein in. If I recall correctly the soups only had about 2 grams of protein. Reading through some post op diet material from when I had surgery in 2003. I read I was supposed to take between 60 - 70 grams of protein a day. I used to try to eat to get it in but am figuring out that I need to drink my protein. The protein powder I use is from Melaleuca.10 grams of protein with water and 19 grams with milk so I use non fat milk.

After a support group meeting last week I was given a bag of Champion Whey and Nectar protein samples to try. And i have been using them. I think the only flavor I had problems with was Kiwi Strawberry, so far. And those have more protein with 23grams of protein.

So back to the 5 day pouch test .... On the 3rd day I had canned salmon, not all of it just one piece with 2tblspns of cottage cheese. There was a little misunderstanding with what I could eat that day so that can of salmon ended up lasting me the whole day LOL. On Day 4 I had a grilled piece of salmon for breakfast.  LOL I still can't get over that I ate stuff like that for breakfast instead of my regular cereal, toast, coffee and a piece of fruit. I know, not much protein if any at all in that old breakfast huh? Day 4 was the same day I had a doctor's appointment I think. I had more salmon for lunch and more salmon for dinner. I know there's other choices for the 5 day pouch test, but I had to make do with what I had. Day 5 I had grilled chicken breast for breakfast, again for lunch and I was really hoping to have some beef steak for dinner but you guessed it ... more chicken for dinner. The toughest times were when I could smell the food cooking. Sometimes that was painful because I know I could decide to eat and at the same time quit the test right? Well I didn't wanna do that. Didn't want to let my head get the better of me with me with food.  I spent a lot of time making rosary beads. Helps keep me busy. That, reading books and listening to music and oh yeah sleeping my ultimate escapes from reality for just a few or at least until I wake up LOL

On Friday the day after the pouch test for breakfast I had a protein shake. Then my Mom and I went to run some errands and while we were out we picked up a protein shake from Emerald City Smoothies. After we were done running errands we went out to the casino for the evening. Usually I drink soda which is a big No No I know that. So I stuck to drinking water. And drank 6 or 7 12 oz bottles of water while I was there so I wouldn't get  dehydrated or be tempted to drink soda. For dinner  I had a bowl of soup and a bit of fish with a few saltines. When we got home I wasn't feeling too well. I'm on Iron supplements 3 x daily and I think the Iron makes me feel constipated :( To top it off about 3:30 in the morning I had a major leg cramp on my left leg right in the back of my thigh above my knee to the side. I tried to massage it out but it got worse. I had to take my cpap mask off because the pain was causing me anxiety. I also needed to go to the bathroom so I was thinking oh great what more could I want from this night. When I went to the bathroom I discovered I had my period. I hate when I get it because unlike most, I never know when I'm going to get it. I was having it quite regularly around the end of the month. But hadn't had it for a few. So now I've noted in my calendar we'll see how next month goes. LOL  I think the 5 day pouch test helped my body out in other ways too.

Saturday got up after 12 pm. My stepdad made breakfast. Pancakes, bacon and hashbrowns. I managed a pancake and a bite. 2 pieces of bacon and the hashbrowns. Later on I had a protein shake. Then about 5pm I had 2 Activia yogurts. For dinner we had homemade tacos with beef lettuce and cheese. And after dinner I had another protein shake. And that besides listening to music while I write and browse the internet was how my 5 day pouch test went and my last 2 days.

Thanks for reading, your comments and support really mean alot to me. Thank you,

Marilyn

Drinking liquids for two days is hard, but you did it!  Good for you!  How did you feel after the 5 days? Did you get full with less food?  Little steps towards the goal!!!
Ciao,
Bella

Hi Bella!

Thank you. It was hard especially not being able to eat things that I could smell being cooked. After the 5 day pouch test I still want to eat the same way LOL Making sure I drink protein more of it over trying to eat it. What I normally eat probably would cover an entire dinner plate and definitely my daily diet included bread and toast. Since doing the pouch test I have not had one slice of bread or a piece of toast and you know what? I don't miss it. Also I have not had one sip of soda. I've been drinking in more water. No coffee or tea either and I always had a cup of coffee or hot chocolate in the morning with my breakfast and a cup of tea in the evening.. I'm feeling really good on the changes I have made and hope I can stick to them and that they will show next time on the scales when I get weighed! Thanks for your interest Bella!

Take Care,
Marilyn

I'm so proud of you    Did they explain to you the reason for not drinking carbonated drinks is that the carbination potentially can stretch your opeing - and you sure don't want that!  But what you can do, is open them, let them go flat, and then drink them - I tried that for a while, decided it was really nasty when I actually allowed myself to taste it and came to the conclusion I liked Crystal Lite better than that - plus CL counts toward my water.

All these changes you're making one day at a time, will sure show up on the scales.  When is the next time you will be weighing?   Get out your tape measure and watch yourself shrink

Have a great BOTT Monday
