X-Post: What are your Staples?

I posted this on the main RNY board too...

I have read time and time again that if someone has a bunch of dietary staples (aka "rutt food" or "safe foods" or a routine), then they are more likely to lose weight and keep it off.

What is a typical day for you... with your "rutt foods" or "staples"?  Obviously those foods would have to be high enough in protein (and hopefully there is some fiber in there).  I am trying to get myself into a routine (food, sleep, exercise, etc).  I don't eat out often, so that will help me create a routine... I just wonder what is typical for others on your average day regarding meals/snacks/drinks.

Thanks!

My staple foods may be different because I don't have malabsorption with the VSG but here they are:  cottage cheese, 2% milk, Turkey jerkey, lean lunch meats, cheese, bacon, eggs, beef vegetable soup and Spinach.  Yes, I said spinach, 1 cup of cooked spinach has 5 grams of protein in it!  I buy it fresh in a big container and either eat it in a nice salad or sautee it in the skillet with a little olive oil, sometimes I add mushrooms, orange pepper and sun dried tomatoes to it...  Hope this helps!  I use the above mostly during the day, I work from home so my snacking opportunities are a little out of hand.  At night I cook a lean meat (chicken, pork, beef, fish) with a fresh or fresh/frozen vegetable or a salad.  Water is my nemesis, it still cramps my tummy.  Hope this helps... My staples are lite string cheese, cottage cheese, ham or turkey slices, ham cubes, cheese cubes, yogurt, banana bread weight control instant oatmeal (w/7gr protein), Pure Protein Bars (chocolate deluxe is my favorite w/20 gr protein). I also make batches of homemade chili and taco soup that I freeze into the correct portion sizes for me, this helps when I am in a hurry. I just toss it in the microwave or lunch bucket and I am good to go!!! I work on the weekends, go to school during the week and still maintain things around the house.....I am so busy its hard to get the exercise in that I need, but I will be done with school soon, so this will change.
I also could never do plain water...I have always done crystal light, cranberry-apple is what I am drinking now. I make a 2 qt pitcher the evening before and try to drink the entire pitcher the next day....this helps me measure it and get it in without having to think to hard about it.....Hope this helps.....Good Luck to You....*.*June

Great post!  I'm happy to share my staples but also enjoyed reading the staples of other BOTTers too.

My staples are low fat cottage cheese, string cheese, deli turkey, Kay's Naturals White Cheddar Cheese Kruncheez and French Toast Pretzels, Turky Jerky, Morningstar Soy Sausages, canned chicken, green beans, Southwestern Egg Beaters and CLICK.

I've found for myself that routine is so important.  Unstructured time can be a trigger for me to disregard my normal committment to BOT and healthy choices.  I couldn't agree and support you more in developing a routine that includes food, sleep and exercise.  You go!

Hi Alyssa,
I always have an array of things that I keep as my staples.  You won't find any milk here...Lactose intolerant, but everything else seems to put me in a panic if I don't have these things readily available.

I always have: LF cheese slices, cottage cheese, Egg Beaters, Dannon yogurt Smoothies, EAS Chocolate Protein Shakes, tuna, Salmon, skinless chicken breast, ham & split pea soup (5DPT recipe), homemade vegetable soup made with kidney & black beans (no meat), Crystal Light and oh yeah peanut butter.  Just getting so I can drink water and it tastes great!

Hope this helps.
