Back On Track Together
I feel the need to post this
So I'm over a year post op... surger was 12/31/07 until tonight I have not had any alcohol to drink and did not care if I had any.. Actually let me say I still don't care... but I was on the main board and someone asked the alcohol question.. I've had a box of red wine sitting around since november (I had a party and it was for my guests) so for whatever reason.. I really don't know why I poured about 3-4 oz in a juice glass.. I'm guessing I drank 1/2 - 1 oz and it went right to my head.. I did pourin another 3-4 ozz... I feel loopy.. I know I will not drink when I am the driver and I dont' think it will be anytime soon before I have another glass of wine.. it was more an experiment than a desire. I can say I got very very warm when I I drank my first few sips.. Anyway I thought I'd post this if others (who have not had a drink yet ) were curious.
Now I think I'm heading to bed very early tonight.. I feel like I can sleep the night away.. I hope I don't have a morning headache.

I'm glad that you posted your experience here. RNY post-ops especially don't tolerate alcohol very well. Due to the way our internal plumbing is from our surgery it is like having an i.v. of alcohol going straight into you.
We had a RNY patient one time that had a very little bit (don't remember the quantity but it was small) and got out to drive. She was picked up because she was driving so irradically. It takes very little to get to us.
You may not feel well tomorrow with a stomachache or headache. If you're comfortable sharing here, let us know how you are.

Cathy, well I had a dull headache right before I went to bed and I woke with the same dull headache. So far, my stomach is ok but I really have not put much into it so I will have to wait and see how that turns out. I do hate to say this but I did sleep well last night, I had some wild dreams but for me thats the norm. (they could make a sitcom out of my dreams.. they are so very bizarre.. last week i was bit by a horse I was riding in my dream.. now how does that happen... I mean I was riding him how could he bite me)
I'm not saying I'll never have wine again but I'm sure it will be some time before I do. And I definately will not be drinking wine if I have to drive anywhere.. thats just not a risk I choose to make. I'm so dependent on being able to drive myself.
Have a great day. Maria

Hi,
Yea, I wish I had never started drinking wine. I really like the taste and wish the affects didn't bother me. I have been to wine tastings to learn about different grapes and how to evaluate wine. I have been to wine festivals where it is alot of fun and music. The social side of wine is alot of fun. It is so different up here in Northern PA, however. People have very little desire for wine. Alot of the bars don't even carry it. People go to bars to socialize and get sapped. So, it is alot better for me up here. Wine is carried in the shops where you buy spirits. There are no wine shops. None of the grocery stores carry any alcohol. PA is a very strange place indeed.

Shoutjoy.. I love your screen name.. Anyway I've been to Coudersport.. in fact once the weather warms a bit I'll be back up in that direction. We went to the dark park (Cherry Springs) a few miles away. For those that don't know what a dark park is... its a location (normally with pretty high elevation) that has zero light pollution. so on a no moon night the stars and sky are just brilliant. You feel like you can almost touch them. well the night I went w/my friend the night started that way and then turned very cloudy... and a thunderstorm rolled in so we didn't get to appreciate it for very long. If you ever get the chance to experience one I'd highly recommend it. I'm also planning a trip up to hike the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. We were supposed to do that the day after viewing the stars but we ended up driving home ... I think its a 3 1/2 ish hour drive..
I grew up in a coal region town where beer and whiskey were the drink of choice and wine was not found very often so I so so sooo understand. I'm now near Harrisburg so I have more options available to me. Its funny now that I do... I don't really need or want them go figure.. Maria

I keep trying to encourage my husband to take his telescope up to Cherry. Hopefully he will this summer. A friend of ours was going to go with us for a picnic at the grand canyon peak colors, but that didn't happen either. Anyway, maybe we can meet the next time you come up our way. I have one more trip to MD in two weeks than hopefully home for the rest of the winter.

OMG!!!!! I have "tried" twice to drink since my surgery a year ago. Seriously...I feel totally drunk within 30 seconds of drinling a shot of tequila...BUT...then am totally sober within 10 minutes...NO KIDDING! So I guess depending on how you look at it...I can be either a CHEAP date or VERY EXPENSIVE(if you want to keep me drunk)
Barb.. if wine got me as buzzed as I was last night I'm not sure what tequila would do to me.. I might not remember the experience : ) I did read something within the past week where a WLS person was drinking earlier in the day and, like you said, felt totally sober 10 minutes or so later. They ended up getting stopped for a DUI.. apparently they were not as sober as they thought. I'm only telling you as a warning, not to judge ok.. Maria
I'm 4yrs out and do drin****asionally. I didn't have my first drin****il about 18mths post op. I don't drink wine b/c of the high sugar content. I do, however, drink Absolut Vodka mixed w/crystal light. I can tolerate it pretty well, but do know my limits. I did have 1 incident since having surgery~I was in a high stress situation and proceeded to drink a small bottle of Absolut by myself over the course of only a few hours and on an empty stomach~needless to say I don't remember about 4hrs of my life and was probably close to having alcohol poisoning. Thankfully I was at the event with my husband so I was physically safe and had a designated driver. I made a bit of an a$$ out of myself, but was forgiven the next day, LOL! That is one thing I know I will NEVER do again high stress situation or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!
