New here
Hi Everyone,
Im new to the group. My name Is Barb, Iam 45 married 23 years to high school sweet heart. One son that is 20 and headed for Iraq in July for 6months. I had my surgery Open RNY-
7-20-2007 in Bangor Maine. Heighest weight 230 current weight 140-145.
The only problems that I seem to have and had some issues with before is lactose intolernt. I have tried poweder milk, soy everything out there and nothing works. It goes right thru. So now I just stay away for anything dairy. Other than cheese for some reason that does not bother me..I dont know guess im weird.
The other problem is low blood sugar is worse. It happens more often now. It isnt from eating food that I can see. Does anyone else have this problem?
Have a great sunday

I can't address your food problems, although my son who was lactose intolerant took some pill that allowed him to eat dairy. Unfortunately he passed last August so I can't check with him what that pill was. Check with your dr. You surely are not the only one with this problem and your dr most likely can help you with this.
Even though I can't do much to address your food problems, I do want to WELCOME you here. This BOTT site has made all the difference in the world to my success. I have found them to be the most caring, supportive and accepting group of folks ever.
Post often and please let us know how we can be helpful

Thanks so much for your kind words. Cancer also took my so. He was 48. Time is truly a healer.
I think this is the most amazing group of people here - but you don't have to limit your support to just here. Nothing says you can't come here and go to your support group too. I believe it is vital we give and receive support if we are to be successful. And I've found it is impossible to give support without receiving support at the same time.
Have a fine BOTT Sunday

Hi Barb,
Welcome to our BOTT group. It is a very special and extraordinary group. I've obtained so much support, friendship and inspiration from the other BOTTers. I hope you post often so you can get to know everyone and we can get to know you too.
You might try Lactaid which is over the counter to see if that helps you. It is not uncommon at all to become lactose intolerant after surgery. Milk disagrees with me and sometimes makes me dump but always goes right through me. I can eat cheese, cottage cheese and yogurt fine. It is the straight milk rather than the other dairy that are made differently than the pure straight 100% milk.
Many post-ops have tend to have low blood sugar. It depends on how low you go and if you incur physical issues that result from it. I run low but am fine as far as physical issues.
A few years ago I had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. They checked my sugars and they were low. I worked in a bariatric practice at the time and our nurse practitioner went with me to the hospital. When they were going to give me the sugar tabs for the low blood sugar she stopped them and told them that it was normal for a RNY patient and not to do that. She had to fight with them about it but, as she told them, it was the right thing to do. I don't know how low your sugars go and if it causes you physical problems. If so, you need to check with your doctor as to how to manage the low sugars and possibly have labs run to check your blood levels.
Again, welcome to BOTT. We're glad you're here!
