Hello,
I had the VSG done at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx on 06.23.11. My pre surgery weight was 336lbs and I am now 269lbs with a goal of reaching 180lbs. I hope to find more support and network with others who are on the same journey.

I agree, I'm tired of going to Manhattan for support groups, I think we should have some more resources in the Bronx, especially since Montefiore Hospital has a Bariatric Program.

Ruthie, sending much love your way and you will be kept in my prayers. My husband was opposed to the surgery too, but since it's something I really wanted, he told me to do it.
I am so excited for you. Make sure you leave us info so we can contact you the day after. You may need the support of people who know your pain and we'll be rght here every step of the way.

My name is Ruthie and I don't live in the Bronx but it was the closest support group I could find. I live in Rockland County but my WLS is going to be at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. So it ses that the Bronx is somewhere in the middle.
I'm 43 years old and the mother of one adorable 10 year old boy. I'm a Director of Adult Mental Health Treatment and I love my job and my career. My husband is fabulous but he would prefer if I didn't undergo this surgery. I know he loves me and wants me healthy but I think he's just scared.
I'm Puerto Rican married to a German/Irish man.
I'm going to have the Verticle Sleeve on 3/2/10 and I can't wait!

Hi I'm Carmen. Born and raised in the Bronx. Mother of 2 and married to the love of my life. I am a law student surrently pursuing my degree so I may attend law school. I'm Latina, of Puertorican descent married to a Dominican patriot. So food wise, everytime the family gets together it is ALL ABOUT THE FOOD.
I am part of the Montefiore Medical Center Program and don't regret it even tho all of my friends went to St Lukes to get Dr Teixiera, he is a pioneer and one of the best. I think I also got a great doctor. The program is also very rigirous. We are on a strict clear liqud diet for 7-10 days after surgery. MY RNY was on January 27th. And other than the gas I felt fine and didn't have an issue with pain.
Like Liza, I believe that if we join together and support each other, our WLS success will be greater and will be a lifetime achievement. Unfortunately I have met people who, a couple of months or years out, start gaining agan. But I think it's ecause they don't have a good support team, especially people like us who know what they are going thru.
Also at Montefiore the staff offers monthly support groups and all are welcome. There veterans, post-ops, pre-ops and potential WLS candidates get together and get information from the doctors, NUT and each other. I will post those dates after Monday.

Good afternoon! I had a pretty good weekend, managed to get in some exercise and did okay eating wise until last night...My best friend and I decided to go out for drinks and we ended up ordering some appetizers (and dessert!) I kind of felt guilty but this evening I am going to my dance class so I can burn off some of the extra calories I consumed last night. I realized that going out to eat is a big part of my social life so I was checking the menu to see what I would be able to order, if anything, in the future after my surgery. I won't be able to drink alcohol, so I guess I'll stick to lemon water but I did see that they had a chilled shrimp ****tail as an appetizer so if I decide to go to TGIFridays post surgery, I will order some water and shrimp ****tail! I can still feel part of the group and eat right at the same time!

My name is Liza and I currently live and work in Bronx, NY. I have been approved for gastric bypass RNY surgery and will be undergoing surgery on Feb. 1st, 2010. I have been looking for local resources and have not been able to find any so I decided to start this group.
I have been overweight my entire life. I have just gained and gained over the years, despite many attempts of losing weight. As many times as I would lose, I would put the weight back on and then some.
I have been attending the Bariatric program at St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital and my surgeon is Dr. Julio Teixiera. It's a rigorous program but I really like it because they make sure that you are fully prepared for your surgery and what comes after. I know that there is a Bariatric Program at Montefiore Medical Center so I'm hoping to attract some new friends who live in the area or will be having surgery in the area.
I'm hoping that this group will be a resource and a support to my fellow Bronxites and New Yorkers!
